Should you add alt tags to banners?

Does it help to add alt tags to a banner image? Or, have you done this. And, what are the advantages or disadvantages of doing so?

The banner is an image on your website! If you use HTML to display it, you will have an image without alt tag which is bad for SEO! It is recommended to add alt tag to any image on a page. Even icon should have alt tag, in that case you add it empty alt=" "!

So long as you are not spamming too many keywords in your alt tag space, you will be fine with Google. Just define what your image is about, keeping your keywords and description to 20 or so words. This will ensure you have adequately described the image and give you a nice SEO benefit.
