How long do you keep a copy of your research?

I still have files related to my various articles written over the past year, archived on my computer. These files usually contain excerpts of research as well as early versions of my article. Sometimes, I think that when I have more time I will reuse the research to create additional articles based on the same subject. I would not want to go through the hassle of doing all that research again, so I just keep the files associated with the project and hopefully one day it will become more.

You should keep a copy of your research for as long as needed as you never know when you will be required to replicate your original work. For instance, if your customer loses his hard drive and files along with it, they might ask you to rewrite the article which you had delivered before. If you did not have your research or a copy of the article you sold, then you would start from scratch.

Well, I am working for five years in this field and i have all the files till now and sometimes if i need anything the previous files can help a lot

I would also ask the person who you are writing for if they want a copy of the research for their records.

That's actually a good idea as they have paid for the service/article already and essentially the research as well as the article should be theirs.

I will think of this next time I write an article. Thanks for the suggestion, Angie.

keeping research is good but original writer may later in future update his web content where you got the research and this may render your research copy outdated or old. try update your research content like say every 3-5 years to get fresh content.

If I do the research for myself, for instance to write a book or atricle, I keep the copy of my research for a long time. In fact I don't delete my research work. If I need to update my article or book, this research will come handly. When I research for client, I will keep the research until the client pays me. After I get paid for my research or the work based on the research, I delete the research. There is no need to keep the research after the work is done.

Clever idea, I keep my previous things a lot especially the very useful ones.When once there's is storage space all my research work both past and new ones are stored, you can't just know when you'll need them, so it was always better to store them to either rewrite them to meet the current findings or reuse them in a new post.

Similar to you style, I also keep all my research materials in an archive particularly the researches I have done for the projects in the office. I think I still have those research materials about the PC when it was emerging as a server. There was not much in the internet yet at that time and most of the research for that particular project was done by interviews and readings in the printed newspapers and magazines.
