    How do you Build a Popular Forum Community?

    Hi all,

    I'm planing to set up a forum, but building a popular forum is no easy task and requires patience and dedication. What's your advice on this? Where should I start? Lessons learnt!

    Have some good subforums and some excellent content and people will want to go to your forum.

    Start with a good staff, including an experienced admin. Especially good if you don't already have forum management experience. I learned all that the hard way.

    Pick a niche that not too many other forums are specializing in or find a new sub-sub niche of an already massively popular forum niche that will allow you to draw out members from other forums to your own without directly competing against the larger forums.

    Forum platforms including vBulletin, Xenforo, bbpress (for WP) is quite good.

    My take on this is to form a task force of maybe 6 to 10 supporters before launching the forum. The task force will provide the initial posts so the forum will have a semblance of a beehive. After a day or 2, you can start promoting your forum in the social media and hope to catch fire among your online friends. But your task force has to continue posting for a month. After that time, you can make an assessment whether to continue with your forum or not.
