What are the advantages of using Vanilla forums?

With the Vanilla forums, you'll pay around $99 a month, which seems very expensive for a hosted cloud based forum. Are there any specific advantages to using the cloud version of Vanilla forums? Or, would you simply download Vanilla and host on your own site?

That price is way out of the ballpark for most forum owners. I can't see any logical reason to pay $100 a month for a hosted site. For about two months of Vanilla, you could more easily buy the Xenforo license for a single forum and host your own site.

Downloading Vanilla for use on your own site is probably the smarter choice as you would be able to put the software on your own space and integrate your forum into your site in any way you want, without having restrictions imposed by Vanilla hosting.
