Are Web 2.0 Sites Effective for Increasing Your SERP Ranking?

It's funny but some people still don't know what "web 2.0 sites" are. Or what even makes a site a Web 2.0 site a Web 2.0 site in the first place. Let alone how they can help improve SERP ranking.

Wikipedia says that; "Web 2.0 describes World Wide Web sites that emphasize user-generated content, usability, and interoperability."

Types of Web 2.0 sites are social media sites and applications that include forums, micro blogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis for example.

And considering how the majority of Web 2.0 sites are usually high authority sites which go on to provide better search engine rankings, why don't more people use Web 2.0 as a way to increase SERP ranking with seeing as they are all mostly free to use anyway?

It seems to me that Web 2.0 sites are mostly very overlooked and underrated by webmasters who are trying to improve their SERP ranking. Why is this?

I've personally seen better rankings when using Web 2.0 blogs because they're a platform that let you create a "home" on them that is basically a reflection of your website and then let you link to your site with is what's mostly a do follow link. Also these can rank highly on their own as well without even needing much SEO!

So why aren't more webmasters using them to increase SERP ranking with? Is it because they don't know what they are so much yet still? Or because of some other reason like having to actually build them and maintain them? Not that they take much maintenance - they are basically set-and-forget. You just create the account, choose a theme, add your content, images, videos etc and that's about it.

Plus they make such great tier 2 backlinks as well which you can link the life out of and if there's any adverse effect on them it only effects that Web 2 and not your actual site.

Whenever I'm building links to my new site. I always start with creating homes on the top Web 2.0 sites and blogs. It has to be done properly though. You can't just whack an article on them linking to your site and expect that to be enough. Although that's pretty much all there is to it. You don't want them to look "commercial" as though they have been created for that purpose only as usually they will get pulled down pretty quickly.

I just wonder why I don't see more emphasis being put into Web 2.0 sites by webmasters who want to increase their SERP ranking with. They're not like article directories that have mostly been deindexed or whacked by Google (EA for example). They rank high on their own and provide long lasting dofollow contextual backlinks to your site. So why don't more people use them in their link building techniques?

Are Web 2.0 sites being overlooked by people and do you think they can be effective at improving your SERP ranking with on their own or when used with other SEO methods?

When Is started hearing about Web2.0 sites I always thought that the only ones were social platforms like facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram, etc. lol

I do use web2.0 sites all the time in my linking campaigns for myself and clients. Sometimes it's easy to set up and execute but for highly difficult keywords it's not a one off thing you can do to increase to the top of the search results. I agree, they are great for tier 2 and help a ton in the long run.

If you have time, I'd suggest building some of your own Web2.0's and treating them like your own websites. I do this with a gaming niche, it's tough and time consuming, but I can now content with the top gaming websites out there like I'm one of the big players even though I work from my couch lol

I do have people updating the sites everyday, but in the beginning it was just myself doing the 10 hours a day of posting, editing and moderating users and comments.

Start off with one of your own Web2.0's and see if you like it. I don't recommend starting off with 10 because you'll just get overloaded and hate it. Build up one and if you have enough to fund a VA to do the posting, editing and moderating I would highly recommend it. Treat it like an investment and you'll be happy you did in 6 months ;)

Thanks for your nice question. Web 2.0 is usually a subject of debate. Several bloggers are still confused concerning web 2.0 websites and some even don’t recognize what they're.
My opinion web 2.0's are still effective for increasing serp particularly on very high pr sites like squidoo and tumblr. though they normally indexed slowly compared to different forms of links.
Web 2.0 backlink excellent for 2nd tier backlinks. Simply think of building it as an authoritative blog and not created for the sake of posting a backlink
Beside, making a web 2.0 website and then linking to your money site won't give you single profit unless there's actual PR from it.
So, finally i'd prefer to say, these links will still be useful however keep in mind that you just might link many web 2.0s to a web site however if they're low quality sites, the links won't be weighted as heavily as once the sites are very authoritative and useful.

Yes that is a very good point. I have a client in the music promotion industry, he asked me how he can get more reach and recognition in the search engines. I told him to use social media and web 2.0 sites. He knew what I was talking about on the social media front but he told me he doesn't know what web 2.0 is and had never literally even heard of it before! It's the same for a lot of webmasters today still even though Web 2.0 is not something that has only just come out, they've been around for years and used by marketers and SEO's for a very long time. But still, some people just have no idea what they are and what they're even used for. Eventually I sent him a list of Web 2.0 blogs he could register his business on, put his links, videos etc on and he recognized some of them. And yes, not all web 2.0 blogs are created equal. Some are better than others. There are only about 5-10 really good web 2.0 sites, the rest aren't really that well known about but still are web 2.0 sites that can be effective when used correctly, not just for building links to your own site but because it's possible to tap into the users on those web 2.0 sites if you actively use them but sadly a lot of people have a "set and forget" attitude when it comes to web 2.0 link building and that doesn't really have the same effect as updating them regularly can have.

I agree that there are in fact webmasters who seem to overlook the potential of Web 2.0 sites. In reality their link building possibilities are really great when it comes to branding as well as for SERP. You can actually create site profiles in several Web 2.0 sites. Some of the best options include YouTube, Tumblr, Wikipedia, Squidoo, Stumbleupon, and of course, Twitter and Facebook. Once you create site profiles on any of these sites, you should then go a step further by linking out to them from your site. This will help to get these pages indexed. Keeping at it by improving the links with tags, pictures and so on regularly will also help a great deal. It is a pity that not everyone makes good use of these Web 2.0 sites. Web 2.0 sites are truly effective as long as the content is of a good quality. They can help to bring an increase in traffic and also a high page rank. If the anchor text points to the site then one would also notice an increase in traffic and bebefit from back links as well. So even though it may take time, I think it is worthed.

May I thank you for posting this discussion because I am ignorant of that Web 2.0 sites that you are talking about. Now I understand that Web 2.0 sites are those sites that allow users to post and in your examples, social media, forum and blogs. I think most of the websites now are compliant with the Web 2.0 style because static websites are getting rare. Particularly with business websites, they are conducive to communications via comments on the web page.
