    How to check find and remove Bad Links?

    How can I check the bad links of a website and what is the method of removing these links?

    I too have wondered this..
    Visibly there doesn't seem to be much of an option available to do it manually.

    Seemingly would be your best bet to send a mail to [email protected] and hope it will be routed to the webmaster. Then again, if said webmaster is allowing such a degradation of his website from spam, it is likely he does not maintain it.

    This might remove a portion of them though.

    Well to do it manually one needs to find them in Google by searching for all the sites that show your link on them in someway or another. See my answer below. Yes contacting the site owners is a good idea, not all will respond/oblige but some will and it will help in the cleanup process!

    That site is dead now and is for finding broken links only by looks of. OP was asking about finding bad links. The kind that come with a courtesy Google slap. There are quite a few similar sites though indeed if one searches for bad link checker.

    Yes it's a great tool for finding them and Google's Disavow Tool can prevent them from harming your rankings, but it doesn't remove those links. It is not enough to rely on the Google Disavow Tool only and one must make an effort and attempt to remove those bad links also. Or not make them in the first place but I understand that's not always in everyones control.

    Well if you know what good links and what bad links are, you can always find these manually in Google by searching for your sites backlinks in Google. For that you would just use the search operator of "yoursite.com" -site:yoursite.com to minus out all results from your own domain from showing and show only those sites that have your domain on them in some way. Provided those links are indexed on that other site then they will show. Then you can literally go through them one by one and if you know which ones would be considered a bad link such as a dodgy profile link on an unrelated forum or something, you can collect them in a file such as in a notepad file or XML spreadsheet or something.

    And as adystanley pointed out, you can then enter those URL's into Google's Disavow Tool so that Google literally disavows them and doesn't attribute them to your site or use them in your ranking. However, that doesn't remove those backlinks, for that you will have to go about doing a removal cleanup and that will involve (at it's rawest form) contacting the site owners and asking them to remove the page where your link is on or just remove the link itself. However, while this can work on some occasions, on others it might not at all because what you have to realize and consider is that those sites that were spammed in the first place aren't possibly and probably maintained by their owners so they may not even get or see your message or even care much about it if they did. Some also may turn round and ask you to pay a fee to remove that link. Some sites do include instructions in their About Us page or Terms or FAQ page etc detailing what to do if you want to request a removal of a link on their site and may or may not charge you for doing that too.

    Of course, there are some other tools out there you can use to find all your backlinks. Both free and paid. Both online (web versions) and software programs that can find your bad links. Ahrefs is a good one or just search in Google for "how to find bad links" and there's lots of sites you can put your URL into and it will search all your backlinks and some will even tell you which links are good and which are bad. Some may only show you some of them and ask you to pay a fee to see them all and some will offer you their link cleaning services too. Some of these are quite pricey and are borderline extortion that prey on the desperation of webmasters. Where as there are some genuine and reasonable priced link cleanup services too.

    By the way, I searched SEOClerks for link cleanup and found a service that says it can Find Harmful Links and Cleanup TODAY for $10. I gotta say that's just a fraction of the cost of what some professionals would charge you today.

    In one discussion about the use of a tool to track the backlinks, I asked about how to determine if the backlink is of good quality or bad. My thinking was to sort out the backlinks and maybe delete the bad backlinks that can be an improvement in the rankings of the site in the search engines. But it is a tall order and a heavy work if the site has thousands of backlinks to speak of.
