How to keep the pagerank of my site?

Recently I bought a domain that had expired, this domain has pagerank 4. I would like to know how to increase or maintain this pagerank?
If I make many quality backlinks, has a chance to keep that pagerank?
Or only the backlinks do not help?
Please help me with this. ;)

You must need to get more visitor and also need to build some backlinks. But don't anyone let to use your website or blog as their backlink.
You can also check the google page rank rules about this. I hope you will get enough help from the google page rank rules.
