Link pyramids and link wheels are not good SEO and are frowned upon by Google. If you check the Google Webmaster Guidelines they say there that they don't want you to participate in any "link schemes" which is exactly what link pyramids and link wheels are! You can still build white hat ethical links such as on Web 2.0 sites which would still have the same powerful effect only without the Google slap!

Simple answer. A link pyramid is like Site A linking to Site B and Site B linking to Site C, but none of those sites are actually linked to each other. These are non-reciprocal links. This keeps each site under Google's radar. Link wheels are reciprocal links and pretty much the opposite of link pyramids.

Thank you for the clarification because I am sometimes confused that my idea was the link wheel is the same as the pyramid. Now it is clearer to me that a link pyramid is a link of a site that also links to another site and so forth but they don’t link back which means that you don’t place a link o the site that has a link on your site. The link wheel is having reciprocal links which means you place a link on the site that has also a link on your site.
