Do press releases work for SEO?

There are many high PR press releases sites online now. Most of them are high trafficked.People use press releases site for brand promotion and news spread. Do you think Press release distribution work well for SEO purpose. As some PR distribution sites charge hundreds of dollars for distribute PR. They get you a quality backlinks to your sites but are they worth of the effort?

I think it does, press releasing on quality sites can highly affect your SEO that too pure white hat and you can think of it as for long term too.

its only work for starting only, press release connected to syndicated content. If you dont put unique content very frequent you might get hit by content duplication from the post you submit to press release
