    You are right that SEO work is a continuing process because you might be left behind by your site’s competitors when you stop doing SEO work on your site. If you have the time then you can do it yourself but for those who cannot spare time for doing SEO work on their site has to get an outsource or a freelancer who can do the SEO work for them. It is important to work on the site regularly particularly with the creation of contents.

    What do they have to do every month? Why isn't it a one time job?

    Who told you that they have to do it every month? They say that but it might not always be needed every month whoa. There are many SEO services here that are a one off payment and will do the work for you that is listed in their service description. The work will be optimized and will be a service that does a certain thing like building a certain amount of links in a certain time frame. This can be enough to help you get better rankings for your site, for the site you've used it on that is! However, if it doesn't help improve your rankings with after a long time like 3 months. Because you should wait that long in Internet terms before doing more SEO like it on that same site again. But then you can purchase that same service again or another or similar SEO service and that will also be a once off, once only payment.

    But like others here have pointed out, SEO is never something that you only need to do once. It's constantly changing and evolving and there are always going to be competitors that are trying to outrank your site. So you have to keep up with that and do more SEO on your site yourself. That doesn't always involve someone else building links for you. It could mean writing new content for your site, creating new videos for YouTube and so on and so on. Because there is always going to be both on-page and off-page SEO to do. Always!

    It is an ongoing process - however if your website has less competition and specific to one particular geo location then try one time seo - Just go to google and type "one time seo" and search you will find some articles by me.

    Because maybe you don't have time to do it yourself and don't want to lose your ranking? I mean why give them a work and not pay them?
    Based on the comments above, it is an ongoing process. So basically yes, you need to pay them because they are working for you.
