google and some other sites do rank websites according to their importance and usefulness. To get a good rank you need quality content and good traffic

If your site doesn't rank in google for popular keywords/terms, you will not get much traffic, unless you use actual advertising. In that situation, you will spend money. Where as SEO is free.

There are various metrics of measuring the rank of the website, some of the common website rank measuring metrics are Domain Authority, Page Authority, Alexa Pank, Google Page Rank (now an outdated concept). Most of the website ranking metrics use backlinks to rank the website, for instance Domain Authority and Page Authority, both use quality backlinks to measure the rank of the website on the scale of 1-100. Some metrics like Alexa use traffic to rank a website.

The ranking is mainly for the position of your website in the search results of the search engine. When a user makes a search related to the niche of your website, the search engine will present a search list starting with the first page. On that list, the searcher may find what he is looking for in the first page so if your website’s link is there, you have a good chance of getting a new visitor. Think if there are hundreds of searchers everyday and half of them clicks on the link of your website, that’s a fairly good number of traffic that you get from the search engine and it’s all because of your website’s good ranking.
