It is ok to make a G+ for your site, but in and off itself it will not help you rank much. If you take the time and interact with your audience and receive +1s from them, then it can be a nice boost to your backlink portfolio and eventually rankings.

Since Google + is a Google product, by claming Google authorship and generating +1 on the contents shared on Google +, your PR will improve. More +1 your content gets, more social signals you generate. Social signals are one of the important SEO techniques. Another important SEO technique is backlinking. You don't get backlink from Google +, but you can getbbacklinks from social bookmarking sites such as stumbleupon, reddit etc.
