    Negative SEO is the reverse of search engine optimisation. The aim of search engine optimisation is to increase a site's visibility in the SERPs. With Negative SEO, the aim of the procedure is to reduce a page's rankings in the search results.

    If the positive SEO is the increased visibility of the website to the search engine crawlers then I guess the negative would be the opposite which is to be hidden or not seen by the crawlers. If you do not upload new contents to your website for a long period then the site will be considered inactive and the search engine crawlers will not check on it because it will notice the last date of update which is already far back in time.

    It's when you do a dirty thing to someone elses website in the hopes they will looks rankings for it and have to spend a lot of time and money cleaning up all the mess that was made. It mostly effects new sites but it can effect old sites too if those old sites don't have enough good aged quality backlinks to even things out a bit. It's like when you build too many links too quick to a new site that site can get penalized for a while or worse longer and never return. By doing negative SEO on someone's website can have the same effect.

    Doing something bad to a website, yeah, that’s the only thing that I can think of to make a website’s ranking go down. However, my question is why do a negative SEO to a site which is probably your competitor? It is better to just do SEO work on your site to increase the ranking and perhaps overtake the competing sites out there. It may not be a good idea to do something illegal against your competition.
