My understanding of Google Plus is similar to Facebook which is considered social media. But in SEO parlance, Facebook is a place for social signals so probably Google Plus can also be in the same league. But definitely, posting in Google Plus, particularly if you have an active account, can be of help with the ranking in the Google’s search list because the links are also considered backlinks.
