Sub domain have a facility. Any body cna visit the sub domain if you publish it worldwide. A website can create huge and huge sub domain and some time it helps the website for giving good visitors.

I think subfolder is more beneficial to the main site compared to subdomain. In terms of SEO perspective, subfolder helps the site more than the subdomain. My understanding is based on a Hubpages discovery. Hubpages is a writing site. It allowed a subdomain for user account, however, later it moved the subdomain to sub folder. The reason was Subdomain were not being reviewed positively by Google.
