When you start working online you probably think you're going to be successful all by yourself. Most of us think this way and it's not actually a bad thing, but you will need to build strategic business relationships in order to break through and become the most successful company in your industry. Yes, building relationships with other people or businesses in your own niche and industry will actually help you out in the long run.
Think about it, how many leads do you think a popular blog in your niche can send you if you were to simply build a positive business relationship with them? If you just started talking to them, helping them with certain things you're great at, and overall building a friendship with them you can actually get them to post about you and that means you'll be getting plenty of traffic from their website. You will also get an SEO boost if you do this right because you can get a dofollow backlink from them, and we all know how much Google loves dofollow backlinks from niche related websites 
You can turn your competitors into friends
When you're trying to build strategic relationships with people, you should never cut out your competitors because they can actually turn into some of your biggest help. Most people look at their competitors as a person or website that should be avoided, but that's the exact opposite of what you should be doing! You should encourage your competitors to talk with you, learn who you are and what your goals are, and this way they will begin to open up about themselves and you can actually team up on future projects.
If you're turning a competitor into a friend, you need to still be cautious about their actions in the beginning, mainly because you don't really know them well enough to let them log into your hosting account just yet lol. Actually, you shouldn't let them do that at all unless they have programming or web design skills that could benefit you, but only let them in if they aren't a direct competitor anymore. Think of it as you're friends, but you're still cautious of what their true intentions are, so you'll be nice and build a relationship with them as long as they don't get access to your systems lol.
Your customers will appreciate you more than they already do
Building a relationship with your customers should be the first people you connect with. Knowing your competitors and being friendly with them is nice, but being friends with your customers is where the money will come from, so start with them and branch out later
Your customers will appreciate you more than they already do if you're trying to reach out and get to know them. They will think "This guy at (company here) is talking directly to me. Not many businesses do that!" and they will be smitten with your words even if you're just telling them jokes
Influencers will talk about you more without being paid
If you can build a relationship with an influencer in your industry they will definitely talk about you more without asking to be paid for it. They will see you as a friend and they will actually recommend you in the comments or in a unique post they make for you. This will boost your guaranteed if they have enough of a following in your industry.
Building a business relationship with an influencer usually means you've been paying them for posts, which is pretty common in this industry, so be ready to pony up some cash before they start talking to you as a friend
You will start seeing free traffic coming in
After a few weeks or months of building relationships with people online, you will start to see the traffic coming in. This traffic tends to be high quality, super targeted, and possibly even organic from the search engined due to all the dofollow links you've acquired from these new friends. It's a slow process to build this type of relationship network, but it's definitely worth it in the long run
In conclusion
If you're just starting off in your niche you'll likely have to build up a website or blog that will entice someone to want to talk with you. You can't have a 1-page website and think "Everyone wants to be my friend!" you will need hundreds of pages of content in order to show them you know your stuff. Never push away a competitor when you should actually be accepting them with open arms. Your competitors can be some of your biggest allies in the battle for online supremacy. Remember, it's better to make them a friend than an enemy, so rule the internet alongside them instead of fighting with your competition lol.

Yeah, it's pretty shocking to see companies without websites and they think they'll be extremely successful in their industry. I usually get a lot of my web design clients this way, I will show them what their competitors are doing online and give them an idea of how much traffic they are missing out on, and they almost instantly sign up with me lol. I think they like working with me because I'm more of an SEO company and not web design alone, so they know I can help them generate additional traffic and sales and not just make them look fancy online lol :D
Some people I talk to think they're going to open a business, set up a free website with a builder from GoDaddy or something similar, and make a ton of money. What they don't realize is that they are not being taken seriously when their visitors see "Powered by GoDaddy" at the bottom of their website. Some people don't even take websites seriously, no matter the design, if they see "Powered by WordPress" at the bottom. A person browsing online wants to be on the absolute best website within the industry, and if you're using something for free then they will deem you as low income, and that means you're not the leader in the industry who should be making plenty of cash to pay for a basic hosting account lol :D
