Whenever you start a website you'll usually build some backlinks without knowing it, and these backlinks might actually hurt your rankings later on in life. You could be building a bunch of profile backlinks due to registering on every website you can, adding your link to your dashboard, and never going back on that website to actually participate. Now, these profile backlinks won't actually hurt your rankings, but they won't help them either since you now have a bunch of low-quality links aimed at your website.
Think of how SEO software runs, what type of links they're building, and how they're building them. If you're doing all of this manually, you'll likely be wasting your time, and we all know time is money 
Instead, you should be focusing on high-quality backlinks than come in the form of in content links that are on niche related websites. This means if you have a dog toy website you should be trying to post articles, with a backlink in them, to dog blogs and websites. The more links you build like this, the better your rankings will be, and the happier you'll be in the end
Search engine algorithms want to see quality links
When the spiders go out to crawl all of the new content in the world then report back, the search engines want to see all of the high-quality content that has been produced. The more content you're pushing around online, the more likely you'll get found, and you'll probably get an increase in rankings due to all of your hard work. Now, you need to have unique content and you can't just publish someone else's article from a related website. You'll get no benefit from this, the search engines will basically ignore you for that link, and you will have wasted your time.
You can't really take any sort of shortcut when it comes to building quality backlinks unless you're hiring a freelancer to build them, even then you need to be sure they know what they're doing in order to gain the right links for your website.
Your backlinking work compiles for later success
When you're building backlinks you will quickly notice that all of your work begins to compile. This means the links you've placed today will still help you in 6 months from now and the longer you build quality backlinks, the more your website will grow.
When work piles up it's not a good thing but when quality backlinks pile up it's a great thing. Google wants to see a natural growth in your backlinks, they don't want to see 1,000,000 links overnight, because that just seems suspicious. The only reason you'll gain a lot of links overnight is if you were to go viral, and even then you'll see your rankings won't just jump up right away. Google takes their time evaluating everything that is being built, and they will rank you accordingly later on.
Place good links now, next month, and next year to always be on top
If you're not taking shortcuts by using software or paying someone to use the same software to build millions of backlinks, you'll usually be ok in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I still use software to this day, but it's never for my tier 1 links lol.
If you're focusing on quality links aimed at your website today, tomorrow, and even next year then you'll be able to see where your rankings were compared to where they are now. Usually, you'll be much higher in the SERPs than where you started, and it's because you focused on building quality backlinks the right way since day 1
Avoid catchy salespeople who offer millions of links with guarantees
I'll tell you this and you should engrave it into your memory, NO ONE CAN GUARANTEE TOP RANKINGS WITHIN THE SERPS! This is because they do not work for Googles search team, they do not know the algorithm completely, and if they did work for Google then why are they selling you a $10 service lol
I've written plenty of sales copy in the past and will likely write much more in the future. I know what to say in order to get you to purchase and usually it comes with a sort of guarantee, but that same guarantee has loopholes, so I can stay safe if my SEO methods become obsolete. People make a ton of money writing sales copy, and that's because they know how to make other website money without the need of lead generation. People all over the world want to convert more sales, so they bring in someone like myself to write their content, and they convert 2x or 3x the leads they use to.
You will get plenty of guarantees when it comes to top rankings within the SERPs, but none of them are genuine because they just don't know exactly how to do it. Sure, we know a lot of key components that go into rankings, but we don't know everything and that's why there isn't a real guarantee when it comes to SEO. Some people will even go as far as saying "I guarantee you will be #1 for your keyword eventually!" which is just them saying "It could take 10 years before you get to #1, so keep paying me!" lol
In conclusion
You need to focus on the right links, not the masses of links that can be acquired by using software, and you should be just fine. Doing the right thing today, tomorrow, and next year will "guarantee" you see a boost in your rankings. You can aim for the #1 spot but don't get discouraged if it takes 6 months or a year, everyone wants to be top dog so you'll just have to keep working
