No one will argue with you if you decided to say that social media has completely changed how we live our everyday lives, because it has. Social media is more than just a place for you to post a new status for your friends to see, it's evolved into a dating scene where you can find a love match to using it as a source of business leads for your company. There are hundreds of millions, maybe even billions, of people logging on every day to their preferred social media platform. This means that there are likely a lot of competitors trying to target the same masses of people that you are, making social media for business very competitive. You should definitely be on a few social media platforms, not just Facebook, if you're trying to be a social media start for your website or company.
It's not an easy road, but these 7 tips below might help you along your way. Success won't come overnight, but it will come if you stick with it and don't screw anything up lol.
You need to be an expert at something
Before someone will begin to follow you on a social platform, they need to see you as an expert within your niche or industry. It doesn't matter what type of website you're running, you need people to see every word you say as the only truth about your niche or industry and you will be well on your way to social media stardom.
You can't just post content about what you know, you need to interact with your visitors when they comment on your Facebook page, Instagram post, LinkedIn page, etc. If you're not talking to them, in real time or close to it, you won't be seen as an expert as much as if you were actually responding to questions with detailed answers.
Again, it doesn't matter what you're an expert in as long as you can back it up. If you claim to be an expert at custom cars, you better be showing your work and backing it up if someone claims a different shop did the work you claim is yours. You know what you're doing, show the people that you do and get them to see you as an authority in order to boost up your social media stardom 
Work across multiple social media platforms
Remember when I said you need to be on multiple platforms? By working across multiple social media platforms you're basically spreading a wider net in order to bring people in to see who you are. If you're on the big ones like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and LinkedIn you might be spreading yourself too thin. You'll want to pick your top 2 or 3 platforms and master them. After you've mastered the first 2 or 3 platforms, you can move on to another 2 or 3 and keep the stardom train rolling on
What's nice about most of the bigger platforms, you can interlink them and only post to one or two and you're done. Posting to Instagram will automatically post to Facebook because they are owned by the same company, which is extremely convenient because you don't have to log into multiple platforms to post the same thing. Another way to do this is to invest in HooteSuite and automate all of your social media marketing
Testimonials are BIG
No one is seen as a star on social media if they aren't getting positive reviews. Sure, you can ask your friends and family to post reviews for you so you can get them started, but that's not the most legitimate way of going about this. I'm sure there are a lot of companies that have some falsified reviews, but they're needed in order to outweigh any negative reviews and push them down so no one can see them
If you don't want to start off with a few reviews from friends and family, you can encourage customers and other readers to leave a positive review on the platform of their choice. Hopefully their platform of choice is something that shows the reviews right when you land on the page and you don't have to search for them
The more people who are talking positively about you, the better you'll be seen by the masses.
Show that you're better than your competitors
It doesn't matter what niche or industry you're in, you will have competitors. You will need to show, and prove, that you're the best within your industry so your followers will stick with you and not go to them. I wouldn't go out there and talk about specific people and websites in a negative way, unless their spouting off words that are clearly false.
You don't want to confront a competitor, because if you end up being wrong, you'll look like the dummy and people will see you less as a star and more of a troll.
Basically, try to avoid calling out your competitors at all and focus more on building your own authority. If your competitor calls you out, you know you'll be right, and you can put them in their place which would make you look better than them
You must be consistent
I can't express this enough, you MUST be consistent with your posting and content in order to ever be seen as an authority or a social media star. If you're posting once a day for a few weeks and then take a month off, people will begin to forget about you, and that's never a good thing
People aren't as loyal as you would think, they will move over to your competitor without much hesitation. If you disappear for a few weeks, don't expect your following to be loyal and wait for you to come back, because they won't. The more consistent you are with your posting schedule, the more loyal your followers will be with you
Switch up how you promote stuff
You may only have one thing you want to promote to your following, and that's just fine, but you'll need to switch up how you actually promote it to them. No one wants to see the same exact email promotion coming to their inbox, so you need to switch it up a bit. You'll need to switch it up between using a testimonial to posting photos of people happy about your product, service, or just you helping them out for free. You can also use blog posts as a sort of advertisement to promotional videos talking about your services, webinars, and/or products.
You'll never want to post the same link within an email 50 different times, unless it's in a signature, so try to vary it up. The same goes with videos, testimonials, banners, blog posts, etc. People want to see new stuff being said about you, and in different formats, so start churning that out and watch your stardom rise
You need to be a guide to your followers, show them the way
If you want your followers to really be loyal, you need to guide them on their path towards success or just keep them happy. You don't need to make them a million dollars, you could simply be showing them the right way to knit a sweater lol. As long as you're helping them out along the way, they will be more loyal to you than if you were to just post a "how to" article on your website.
If one of your followers is doing well, call them out in a positive way and congratulate them for their success. They will be more loyal to you for recognizing them and the people watching your social media profiles will see you're a real person that acknowledges their followers for doing good
In Conclusion
Becoming a big social media star is a difficult thing to do because the journey is so long, but it's not impossible. As long as you stay on top of your game, you will see your following grow each month to the point where you're the main person to go to for anything related to your niche or industry

Building up your social media presence is a great thing to do for your business, digital or brick and mortar, and will usually increase your sales. In fact, a lot of marketing tricks can convert over to a brick and mortar style business if you tweak them slightly :D
