Well, it's not known for sure if Google uses social signals as a ranking factor, that said, I've seen definite improvements in ranking when I've applied a mix of different kinds of social signals to my sites. And at the end of the day, a backlink is a web page like any other and will have its own SEO score like your own web page has. So adding social signals to those SEO backlinks (if Google takes them into consideration) would make them more powerful. Besides, other search engines like Bing/Yahoo probably do take them into consideration also.

From what I understand based on the discussions here about social signals, they are now considered by search engines as legitimate backlinks. That means your post in Facebook or your tweet about your website that includes the link, of course, will be considered by search engines in their evaluation. In fact, the social signal is actually a backlink although it was posted not in ordinary websites but in social media network.
