When it comes to social media management, you need to be on top of things or you'll get left behind. How many of your competitors are on social media? Probably all of them, so you should be too lol. If you can't do your own social media management then you should be thinking of outsourcing the work to a credible company. But how do you find a company that is credible? You can look up reviews and ask on open forums, but those could be biased reviews of a service that the person is connected to. You'll need to do a great deal of research about what the companies are all about, what they do exactly and how long they've been doing it. Sure you could just hire anyone you find on SEOclerks.com but will they be the best fit for your company?
I was looking to outsource my social media management to someone who could actually get the work done since I didn't have time, and I could never find someone that fit the mold that I made for the perfect person. Eventually I had to settle on someone and I never should have because they ended up getting a couple of my accounts banned due to them not knowing the policies of the platforms and doing too much in a short amount of time 
Eventually I just buckled down and outsourced a different part of my work to go at social media management by myself, which I'm glad I did
After about 6 months of doing all the SMM myself, I decided to slowly bring people in to help me out. I wasn't looking for anyone right away because that is how you make bad decisions and just hire anyone that contacts you first. I wanted this person, or people, to fit my mold even if it cost me a little more than I'm usually paying. I don't mind paying a little extra because it's for a higher quality of work and not someone that was going to just get me banned again lol.
Right now I have some people, who are basically my social media team, and they handle most of what I need done on a daily basis. They likely automate some of the work because I'm not paying them thousands each month to do this lol. I'm not scared of automation because if it's used right then it won't matter, it's the bad apples that ruin it for all of us
After a couple of months of my new team getting down and dirty with social media, I now have a pretty great presence online for a few of my websites. I have one person running each platform so that they don't have to worry about different posting methods and limitations, they can just get super focused on the one platform and perform better I've noticed a huge rise in followers and likes across my network and it's definitely helping out. I haven't really profited much doing this because I'm paying a premium for the work, sort of, and I'm usually breaking even with all the new clients coming in. But breaking even is good with me because it will likely start to compile and I will eventually profit
This setup has done so well for me that I actually started selling as a service to my own clients, and they love it! I double the price of what it costs me so that I profit well, and my clients love the work that's being performed so they never complain month after month of being signed up lol.
In conclusion:
You never know what will happen when you start to set up a great system for your own profits. You could end up like me and try automating what you can and eventually get annoyed with it and do it yourself to only outsource it to people who were doing the social media management everyday I'm actually tempted to sell it as a service here on SEOclerks, or at least sell it as a per platform type of service lol Outsourcing can actually turn into profits in ways you never would have thought of

I'm kind of line wolf, I like doing things my way, I usually teach myself the process until it becomes profitable and then look for somebody to teach that process.
All this takes a lot of time and as you said, at first it won't be profitable. It took time and money to get my two guys skilled enough in content promotion to actually turn a profit around. But once you have a few skilled people that really want to work and won't waste your time, you can go ahead and start looking for clients. Fortunately, I never problems in finding clients and I always have more work on my hands than I can handle, the real problem is letting go and outsource some of my current clients, but as I said, I
'm a lone wolf and I like things done my way by me and maybe this is the reason of my success as a part time freelance.
