Recommendations vs. Ratings - What

Recommendations vs. Ratings

- What's more important?

Let's start with this.

What is Ratings?

a classification or ranking of someone or something based on a comparative assessment of their quality, standard, or performance.

What is Recommendations?
the action of recommending something or someone.

So even if these two might seem similar, they are different from each other. On SEOClerks for instance, you'll see that sellers gets ratings, positive or negative on their services. And sellers can also get recommendations from their clients.

- Both of these can be read by any other user, at any time.

So, what do you look for if you're about to hire someone?

Do you go with people with positive ratings or with recommendations, and do you trust one of them more than the other one based on these?

Personally, I do go with both. None of these are a deciding factor in it's own. But I definitely love to work with people others have recommended. Sure, I could just read some ratings to see how good a person is on this specific thing, but I'd rather go with someone with a handful of recommendations, as it's easier to get positive ratings than recommendations.

You'll have to go that extra mile to get recommendations. And that's important to me when I'm finding decent people to work with.

That being said, a person with 20 recommendations doesn't necessarily do a better job than a seller with zero recommendation. But to me, it's still a sign of professionalism.

And in life, I'd rather go with something my friend recommends than something I see 10 other people are saying "thank you" for.

What about you?

The issue here is that most buyers dont really know that there is something called recommendation, when they see a product or service on sale and visit the link, they will only see the ratings and that is what will judge whether they should go for it or not. but to me, i will go for ratings as they truly reflect the quality of the product or service being rendered on sale.

Yes that may be true of a lot of buyers but I have always gone and read all the recommendations. Then again I am also the type of buyer that will leave a recommendation so that is why I noticed it probably in the first place.

Hi hitmeasap thanks for raise a nice point. I think both are importance for any seller or buyer. Rating is the most common part of any marketplace and I think most of the buyer before hiring someone he/she look rating first than other things. Specially on gig based site, seller service reputation mainly depend on rating. Because, always it is showing bottom on the service on any gig based marketplace. But, on Seoclerks it is bit different, and here most of the expert buyer looking both of this rating and recommendation. As new buyer he may not much aware about recommendation on SEOclerks. At the same time seller point of view, before working for any buyer, myself always checking buyer rating and recommendation too.

Lastly I would like to say for better and fair work both is working fine on SEOclerks. First rating for service then recommendation for seller or buyer.

This is an interesting one Andre and something I have been thinking about recently since I have sold a few services here and a few on another marketplace... certainly not enough to be considered a power seller but a few.

I've noticed that never mind even getting a recommendation or a review, it is like trying to draw blood from a stone just trying to get the buyer to mark the order as completed LOL.

It is interesting now to be on the other side and see how things work for the seller.

But to answer your question I have always had a look at the reviews and the recommendations, I am interested in both of them and I have always paid attention to both.

I have always read through all the recommendations and questions and answers on the sellers profile and services. I like to get an idea of how the seller communicates with their clients and potential clients too.

I have to say though that if someone has less than a 90% rating I am not inclined to purchase from them.

I am not inclined to purchase from them.

That's actually interesting Lynne, and I couldn't agree with you more. I know that it's easy to get tons of negative feedbacks as a social media seller for instance, as followers or whatever the thing you provide will decrease with time, as most of these are fake.. - Which makes it easier for the buyers to leave a negative review.

That being said, I still can't really tolerate it. I just can't help to believe that the seller is fooling around and doesn't take their business serious with less than 90% ratings. - I mean, you can always make a good enough impression on your client so you'll get a positive feedback instead of a negative one.. Or at least, you can try, and most of the times you'll be able to make it happen. Even if the client was dissatisfied for starters.

That's exactly it Andre and if you have a 90% rating that means that 1 out of every 10 people that have rated you have given a thumbs down? That's actually quite a lot isn't it?

I just can't be bothered with someone that has a 1 out of 10 chance of disappointing me. I am also running a business here and time is also money. I don't want to cancel an order and then contact support for a refund and then still go find someone new to use.

I don't like negativity and I avoid it as much as I can. If someone has over 90% rating then that is good enough for me and then I look at the recommendations!

Ratings have an effect on the total amount of ratings, and so when they start adding up, they are really a good indication as to how many satisfied or unsatisfied buyers that seller has. Sadly, there are some buyers who do not bother to leave a rating, and to be honest this really irritates me considering that it just takes a split second to do so. Recommendations have a more personal touch, and to an extent, more power. The buyer has teh possibilty to express himself in more detail, and it shows clearly that he much be really happy with that service if he took the time to write a recommendation. So although they are both important, I really love recommendations.

Well then I am glad to have made you happy leaving a nice recommendation Recommendations vs. Ratings - What

I know what you mean, since really the ratings and recommendations are vital to the success of a seller here. Yes there are other factors too but when a new seller comes and has a look around the ratings and recommendations are the one thing that might get a seller a sale from that newbie.

I also love it when I can see recommendations and ratings. It helps making my decisions for purchases easier.

What an interesting question. I suppose I've never really thought of it before when it comes to ratings and recommendations on here. I've always just sort of taken them both for granted if you know what I mean and seen the ratings as feedback that's left for buyers and seller. And the positive recommendations as just that. Since you can only leave someone a positive recommendation. What I do see though and think and believe, is that recommendations carry more weight than ratings do. This is because it takes more effort by someone to leave seller or buyer a positive recommendation as you have to make sure that it's a minimum of 30 words and most people just say "thanks". lol

I like how some sellers work to get those positive recommendations though. Mostly they mention it after they deliver the service to do so and I can only presume for the most part, it works out well for them. But I never look at them with too much zest since it could well be they were selling some simple $1 service for which they got most of those positive recommendations from and not something else like some big service they would have worked hard on to make sure the buyer was happy and actually made them want to leave a positive recommendation.

But I still use them to base my decision on which seller to go with sometimes. Or even look at a buyers amount of positive recommendations and see if any were made by previous sellers they had used to get some peace of mind or a feel for that buyer if you know what I mean.

Although generally I'll just look at the ratings (feedback) on the service itself that I might want to buy to see what they look like. And then perhaps take a quick glimpse at their positive recommendations. But only mainly more for the sellers/buyers that I don't know.

Some sellers are BIG sellers and I have used them for years and know them by first name or something (Andre). Recommendations vs. Ratings - What lol

So I just know I'm going to be safe and get a good deal anyway! Recommendations vs. Ratings - What

Haha, yeah I hear you Mike. I'm nothing near a big seller on SEOClerks though, but I suppose we know each other.. So it's okay. You can call me whatever you want, as long as you don't call me "hubby" or "sweetheart" or something. - That's not professional! Recommendations vs. Ratings - What

However, I do see your point, and I often read recommendations do sort of "filtering". So I can see recommendations that are simply like a review, for a social media service for $1 etc. That doesn't count for me. Not at all. I don't care about $1 services. - But I do like to read recommendations more than feedback (ratings), to get "the bigger picture" so to speak. Especially if I'm about to hire someone for a rather big project.

I guess recommendation works better than ratings. People always trust on the source which is recommended by someone they know!

I hate asking for recommendations, even though I have a few paper ones and a couple of recommendations on my LinkedIn profile. I don't really understand how "ratings" work in your country and how exactly could my potential employer view them. Overall I don't need recommendations or ratings when going for an interview, I can handle myself pretty well without those.

As far as the online arena goes I do take the number of positive reviews and ratings into consideration. I want to figure out how many sales the seller had and how many of them were successful resulting in a positive review, the more you have the better you look in my book.

I think both are really important considering the fact that ratings would give you higher chances of landing a job of a client that is looking at how previous clients have rated working with you while recommendations, which has to do with most of your clients referring others to you, is also a great way to go about it. Though, I would have to say recommendation is better since it comes with that prior mindset from the client that you can deliver on the work.

They are equally important for me if I want to hire someone to do a job. It's good to hear that there are lots of people recommending you to do the job that they need as they clearly experienced and satisfied of the work that you've done to them. Having a good rating is also a basis of hiring a good people to do the job for you. Having a high rating means that there are lots of people also satisfied with the service that you've provided to them and they're giving you an exceptional rating as a sign that you're also doing a great job and can be trusted.

if I'm to hire someone it has to be a recommendations that a rating. I know rating is good but recommendations is more helpful at least the person is good or even excellent to be recommended. I don't want to rely on any random rating but on ones that have been tested and trusted.

I used to be handling the interview of applicants for our department but they are those who have passed the screening of the Human Resources Department. Whenever I would see that an applicant has a good recommendation, I tend to be positive. But it depends on who was recommending because anyone can give a recommendation. Anyway, rating is good but I think a recommendation is a solid proof of the person’s qualification and integrity towards work.
