    Where do you host your files? - External hosting or your server?

    Dear Freelancers,
    Do you store your files on your own server or on external hosting sites like dropbox? - Files you want your customers to download or perhaps entire backups of something.

    I've heard great things about Amazon Cloud storage, especially for large files but I've never used it myself. Do any of you have any experience to share? - Have you ever used Amazon Cloud storage?

    I haven't looked at it too much yet, but it seems like it's a bit expensive. I might be wrong, but anyhow, I'd appreciate any ideas, thoughts or answers! Where do you host your files? - External hosting or your server?

    For the moment I'm not using any file hosting to store my files, I have everything stored on my external HDD because I don't trust my files there. If I need to share/upload something like a photo or text file etc etc then yeah I prefer to use Mega and Dropbox , they both are perfect , Dropbox gives you 2GB for free, and Mega 50GB which is more than enough for my needs . As per Amazon Cloud, actually I've never used it but from what I see it's not that they're offering something more than other sites don't have it. For example, they give you unlimited storage for only $59.99/year, well to be honest it's not a bad price, but I think it's more for companies that have a lot of data. I won't pay for an unlimited storage unless I have more than 10TB to store.

    Hi,

    I don't normally have too many things to upload so I normally just use my own web hosting account to upload files because I seem to always have free disk space on my server. I don't think it is worth it to purchase external file hosting because as a webmaster you can just use your own server. However, if you buy your own server just for hosting files, then it may turn out to be more expensive than buying external file hosting. I have never used Amazom Cloud storage but I heard some good things about them and they seem like a good option if you are looking for external file hosting.

    I'm the same, I don't use any big file hosting solution. I either store all my files on my computers internal HDD or copy them to another external HDD or even back them up to a USB key. I have some of my important documents and text files and stuff backed up to my USB key. Either that or I'll use my hosting solution to put them on my server in some hidden file outside of the public_html directory or something. I've never really needed a file hosting solution. I don't really download a lot of files these days.

    I do use DropBox but mostly for music. I have a shared folder on DropBox with several people that I drop new music, tracks and MP3 files into that I want to share with them. But that's about it. Have never used Amazon cloud storage either. I'm sorry I don't have anything else much to tell you than that Andre.

    Thank you Mike. - Well in all honesty, I accidentally stumbled upon a similar topic yesterday, but I am interested as I've heard so many great things about Amazon Cloud storage for instance. That being said, I would like an option to store my files or make backups of certain things from my computer. - About a year ago, my PC went nuts and I lost everything on it. Which also was a tremendous amount of work-details. I would like to protect myself from that to happen, but it looks like I should use an external HDD or a USB then, instead of an external hosting.

    I save absolutely everything to Dropbox, nothing gets saved to my laptop or my computer!

    A few years ago the laptop and pc I had both broke on the same day and I lost like absolutely everything.It was a complete disaster and from a work perspective it hurt like hell. Of course losing all my photos and personal files didn't feel great either!

    After that I started using Dropbox and online services, like Pastel Online for my accounts instead of a software on my machine.

    It was an absolute pleasure when I accidentally fed my newish laptop an entire cup of coffee about 3 years ago.. I just went and bought a new laptop, signed into Dropbox and within about an hour I was working like nothing had changed.

    But to answer your question about Amazon Cloud, I've heard of it but I have never tried it.

    It sounds like you're either rather clumsy or very unfortunate Lynne. In either case, I'm sorry for you. However I can see why dropbox would be awesome to have in cases like these and I've been playing around with the ideas of doing backups myself just like you, but, I can't decide where or how.

    With all the great replies in this topic, I'll probably go with the USB or an external HDD option though, as it feels more "safe" somehow. Compared to using dropbox that is.

    When it comes to security and file hosting i don't think trusting anyone is a good idea. Dropbox and the others you mentioned are great for sharing files that are huge the share link feature is awesome. If you have information that you want to keep safe i don't think this is the best way to do it. What is the best choice? If money is no object or you have really important files than i recommend Synology box for this purpose. They do not use Windows or Mac OSX, they have their own OS which makes it harder to create viruses and back doors. They are always updating the firmware and keeping security #1 for their clients. You can add up to 4 drives in these boxes and they can be mirrored so if one goes down you have a back up.

    I use multiple sources depending on their importance. For examples, my photos are automatically sync in Google photos but I also keep them in my 64GB phone SD and from time to time I move everything on my external HDD.

    On my external HDD I also keep my wedding videos, photos as well as other important files. VERY important files I usually keep on multiple places, like dropbox, google drive and my external HDD.
    I also have a couple of USB sticks around 64GB for moving files fast from one device to another.
