Internet security Do you have a safe network?

When is comes to your home network you don't really think much about security. 95% of people just use what the ISP provides for a router and modem. Some people think that anti virus is enough. Did you know that if someone can access your network they can bypass that anti virus? They can access your computers download files or worse put a key logger on your computer. How do you protect yourself from network penetration? I will explain two of the best to do this for you. One of them is firewalls and the other is not using your ISP provided router and modem.

Firewalls are your first line of defense when it comes to your network. When choosing a firewall i always recommend something that does not have a reoccurring cost. If you don't mind paying on a yearly basis though Maraki is the best solution. Easy to use and it works great with any network big or small. If your like me and need something that is cheaper i would go with sonic wall. They are also very easy to use and install. Your third option and one that is a little more for advanced users is PF sense. It is actually the cheapest solution starting at only $20.

ISP companies are crooks when it comes to modems and wireless routers. They will charge you $5 a month for the lifetime of your equipment $7 if you need wireless. How long have you been paying this fee? I recommend skipping the hardware they use and getting a surfboard modem they start as low as $40. Wireless router really depends on how have your load is and how many devices you have. The average wireless router is about $60 bucks. Firewalls also come with wireless for more wireless security and that is probably your best bet.

I hope this has helped you make your network at hope more secure. As always thank you for reading please don't forget to follow me and like the topic.

Firewall is really very useful and people should know how to download and install it, there are some antiviruses that comes with firewall feature built-in but it's not necessesary to spend on something that you can find it for free on the internet. When it comes to security, computer as any other device is vulnerable, it doesn't exist a device/software that is 100% security proof. Using firewall and antivirus it will give you only 10% of protection, 90% it's you. I'm saying that because there are viruses that can bypass any antivirus and firewall very easily, the most important thing is to be careful while browsing online. An important thing if you're using a wifi router, is to change the default logins, because most of people that use wifi routers do not know about default logins, and that is something to worry about because routers are the most targeted devices when it comes to attacks, and another important thing is to update their firmware whenever a new update is released.

Yeah, I once read that the safest computer of them all, is one that's switched off, locked inside a lead box, wrapped in chains and sunk off the Mariana Trench! No computer system is 100% protected, there will always be new viruses, trojans or rootkits that are written that the anti virus companies don't know about. Not until they have gone on to infect enough computers for someone to report it and submit it to them so they can reverse engineer it, see what makes it tick, and what kills it and add a definition for it to their database which comes in the form of an update and not everyone bothers to update their anti virus. A lot of people think you just install it and that's that. But it's more than that and a lot of anti virus apps require manual updating before they will.

And yeah, the default password thing. Do people still not do that?

Yeah, that is true. Actually they see updates as something unimportant, but without updates antivirus it's dead, there are some antiviruses that need a lot of internet and I admit that sometimes they're annoying sometime specially if you have a low speed internet connection, but that's how antivirus works. It's better to uninstall it completely then using an antivirus with an old database from 2014. Internet security Do you have a safe network?

Yeah, from my experience, most of them have never changed their default logins, actually it's not their fault if you ask me because it's not that they're familiar with those things. However, ISP-s can and should change default logins to make them more secure.

I agree with you free stuff is available. When you have a network of devices over 25 you need the correct hardware. We have to have multiple 24 port switches, Firewall, and a few work stations. Firewall is useless if one of the computers are compromised, and that is why i agree with a double layer of protection. I need Traffic shaping, Static Ip's, and other rules that are needed to run the set up i have. That is the other great reason to have a firewall especially if you have WIFI. That is a fact that many people do not now how to change the default setting on the router. Even with change of passwords their is software available in combination with Linux can penetrate and break the code. It is probably safe to say that your never safe. The important thing is that if you take these extra steps, and apply the layers of security the average hacker will have a hard time. Thanks for your comment!

I agree that it is important to have an antivirus and a firewall. Unfortunately many fail to appreciate the importance of being safe online, and there are several who prefer to leave their computer unguarded rather than pay anything. I believe that many users never truly understand how risky it all is.

I agree with you but people need to also educate themselves on how to keep themselves safe. Downloading content your not sure of can destroy your life. If you have all of these things but you compromise yourself all that you have done is in vain. Thanks for sharing

It's probably very stupid of me and I shouldn't say this, however I don't have secure Wifi on the connection I'm using nor do I have my firewall enabled. I am completely open to hackers, and they are open to me as well. Internet security Do you have a safe network?

The reason why my wifi is unsecure is because it's actually the Xfinity (Comcast Internet Service Provider) Wifi Hotspot that I am using. I'm not too certain of how just secure it is, but it's probably not that secure as a home connection. You can access the wifi as long as you are a customer of Comcast/Xfinity.

It makes me wonder if hackers use any programs to brute force the login page, and then gain access to a connection which seems like it would be more likely to occur, and then they will infiltrate your system and unload malware/adware/spyware etc. Also, a lot of internet safety newbies are not aware of what Remote Access is, if this option is turned on or even a homegroup turn these options off. Turning off those two features is probably the first thing I do once I get a new computer or even reinstall windows, and I strongly suggest that people turn these off unless they actually need them.

Gets your IP address, starts rifling through all your files. Changes your password, accesses your bank, transfers funds to my family in Nigeria. I joke of course, but that kind of thing can happen on an unsecured network. There are people that go out and do what's called "War Driving". War driving is the act of driving around with a laptop with Wifi enabled on it and they look for unsecured Wifi networks they can access. Those that don't have passwords on them like yours. Once they have this they can quite easily gain access to your router and any computers that are connected to it. It's likely that, if there is an unsecured wifi network they can access, that those people aren't using a firewall on their computer also. And that can be devastating to those people who are hacked and attacked this way because it can mean then putting viruses or other malware or keystroke loggers on your PC. Why ISP's and modem/router manufactures don't do more to make their customers aware of these dangers is beyond me!

Mike this is exactly what i was mentioning above about the network penetration. The internet is a scary place for sure!

People also need to be aware of FREE WIFI. Im not saying you do this but people give away WIFI free in public areas to steal your information. They can make you use a DNS server that allows them to track you every move and more! What is the solution for this? VPN is the best way to avoid this when in public. You made a good poing people should not leave the computers on. All of my workstations are on 24/7 plus the 23 miners. Thanks for sharing!

I have a very complicated Wifi password, same for my ISP router password, plus a firewall from both my operation system and my wireless router. I'm also highly careful on everything I access and download.

If this isn't sufficient helpful then I don't know what is and as Mike said the best way to have 100% protection is to have a switched off computer, I think not connecting it to the internet is sufficient as long as you do use and USB sticks or DVDs, lol.

That is a good point! Having a strong password is a great protection. Make sure you never use anything coming just because its easy to remember. Nothing will work if you compromise yourself that is why we have to be diligent when using the web. Thanks for sharing that awesome point.

All my passwords have random characters and numbers and my WIFI password is unique, I used it only for Wifi.

I have two friends that use to work for Microsoft none of them use any special security to protect their computers, in fact, one uses no security at all and he has never gotten hacked lol! In fact, like you mentioned there really is no bullet-proof security for any computer. Hackers can get by any security unnoticed. Therefore I always just use the free version I get with any windows why waste money lol? The very security that you use to protect your computer is considered a virus also in a way that is how it can detect other viruses. Your best defence is not to download Free celebrity pics online and stay away from the adult sites. People that pick up virus it always seems it happens from visiting a questionable site or downloading questionable software!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

idealmike
Yeah that's it, if you don't visit any strange sites and download questionable stuff and only visit safe sites and don't install any iffy software or open any random emails and the like then you can pretty much stay safe and protected. But if you do do any of that, even the most up to date and advanced firewalls and stuff can only help you so much as there will always be things out there that can bypass all of that anyway. It's like a cat and mouse game where the mouse is 2 steps ahead of the cat all the time! Very well said.

I have firewall, antivirus and a password that is hard to crack, it is something like bitcoin address. I also don't do too much of downloading. Until now, I have not encountered any problem, however, every now and then I hear about hacking. And this makes me very cautious.

I have added Google DNS and OpenDNS. So most of the phishing sites are filtered this way. Though speed on my end some of the time can be slow. But it can be worth noting that it's a good network. And it can take care of the security aspect of the home network of your internet. So just check out if that is safe enough for you. I personally have found out that such private DNS with better filtering and speed can be good enough.

Our home internet is a subscription from a reputable company so the source is clean. With our computers, they are all protected by firewall and anti virus software. It’s a big risk now to browse the internet without protection because of the prevalence of malware. You don’t really know when they will attack and you should have a mentality that there are no clean websites. At least you are always wary and careful in visiting new websites.
