Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

I know that having your website on social networks is a great idea, I have seen how social media marketing can increase awareness of your business and drive loads of great traffic to your website.

But here's the thing there are so many new social networks popping up all the time, there are also loads of really good established social networks that are great for business.

But now I have 3 websites and I also have my own personal profiles. So for each social network that would be like 4 different profiles. Or like for some social media websites it would be one profile with 3 pages for example. But then there are also groups... ok let's just forget about groups for this discussion.

The point I am getting to is that I am on about 6 social networks where I am very active but where do I draw the line and say ok that is enough now, I am not doing anymore?

I have recently joined Instagram and the results have been awesome, and I also started being active on Quora... but now what about Tumblr, Slideshare, StumbleUpon....

Where do you stop and why?

I've actually wanted to get more into quora, slideshare, stumbleupon and a few others. I've been researching a few awesome ways to generate traffic from slideshare and I think I'm going to post a discussion to let people know what I've figured out Social Network Overload - when is enough enough? But besides that, I think that quora will be a good source of traffic to my websites after I build up my profile. I have heard that if you post about certain niches and leave links, you could easily get banned. So I'll have to do a bit more research on that topic before I start posting any kind of links Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

As for how much is too much, I would say that too many is when you're working more than you're making. A good example of that is if you're putting in 10 hours a week into a social platform and you're not making any money off of it. Let's say you think you should be paid $15 an hour for your time, then those 10 hours a week are equivalent to $150. You could easily pay someone $50 a week to post for you from your own profile. I've seen plenty of great services here for quora and yahoo answers that charge like $20 for 20 answers, so if you paid them $50 a week you could have a good amount of links coming from these question and answer websites Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

You always have to think if the time invested is worth it in the long run. I usually do it a little backwards now and pay someone to do posts for me on newer, or less populated, social networks so I can see if it's worth my time building my personal profiles on there. The big secondary platforms such as quora, yahoo answers, tumblr, and stumble upon seem to be good in my opinion, but I don't know how much time I'd be able to invest into them. And in the end I have to evaluate if it's better to outsource it to someone over seas who isn't affected by any kind of language barrier or if I should do the posts myself.

Just remember, time is money Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

Yes I saw your discussion about Slideshare and I was very interested when Mike posted about Slideshare previously so I am waiting to see what you share with us about it.

I have started going onto Quora regularly and I am pleasantly surprised at how nicely it works. I had someone contact me via email that saw me on Quora and she might just become a customer which is cool.

So I do think it is worthwhile on Quora. I have recently purchased a service for posting my links to Quora and I saw an increase in my traffic this weekend so I am feeling quite happy with that. I will be ordering again.

I think enough is enough when social media starts to consume more than 50% of your day. People don't realize it but the average person spends 8 hours a day on social media or more. Whether its on your phone laptop or desktop it still counts. I try and limit myself to 2-3 hours a day max, during this time im posting to stay active and making sure people know what i do. I think 6 is to many i would stick with the basic 3 The Book The Gram and the tweet bird. Thanks for sharing!

LOL oh no.... I don't let it consume much of my day at at.. In fact I stay as far away as I can from social media but then I have to log in every now and then to see what is happening.

Yes I am also on all of those, but I am also on G+, Pinterest and LinkedIn.... oh and Youtube.... and Quora. LOL

I do hear you! There are way too many available and unfortunatelly they are confusing. One guy told me that is better to stick with the leaders, just pick up 5 popular platforms and stick with them.
Arrange your accounts as you please, update them regulalry, engage in conversations and you should be ok.

I like to my a good job with fewer networks rather than to use 15-20 platforms but not being able to keep them updated.

Quora is a great place to start but there you don't have the "liberty" to do whatever you want. You have to write really good answers, research them a bit because they have a more, how to say, educated users and they flag everything that is out of the Quora Standards.

Yes for sure Quora is great but like you say there are more limitations than social networks.

I have enjoyed all these answers and I have come to a decision. I am drawing the line right where I am now. It is more than enough, I have all the main social networks covered already!

Probably never! As an online marketer you'll be forced to use them all in one way or the other, but from a normal person point of view, I have to agree there are quite a lot of social networks out there!

But think about it, you don't need to be on all of them since most have different purposes. Instgram is full of people looking at photos and doing fashion marketing, snapchat is full of teens and trendy pop-stars. Fb is probably the place well all of us call home and LinkedIn is for professionals looking to make connections.
Twitter is for whatever, fast updates, news, stuff like that. The rest are just noise, I think no "normal" person is active on all of them! It will be pretty impossible, a full time job, lol.

Ok perfect I am on all of those that you mentioned already. I am quite content now to just stick to those plus Quora Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

I hear you loud and clear! It's all well and good running and maintaining one site. But as a freelancer it's about having multiple streams of income. And that might mean having/running and maintaining more than one website. But with each site you have to have a social profile for it. Whether it's a FB page, Twitter, Insta, G+, YouTube channel etc etc etc. And it's not enough to just set them up once, post a bunch of your posts to it and than that's that. Each requires nurturing. Much like a garden does, in order for it to grow. In order for it to be a useful tool for your site that can be used to send traffic to your site. But if you don't work on them, if you neglect them, they just become more or less obsolete and nobody can know about them and they're not really being very productive for you.

But it's enough work to manage the social profiles for one site. Start adding more sites to your portfolio and you have to manage more social profiles and pages and that is not only a huge time suck but also means the more you have, the less you'll be able to do on each.

This shouldn't mean that you shouldn't have them though. Even if you just set them up and let them sit there. At least you'll get a link from them for your site and even if you only update once or twice a week/month, that's still an update and will look much better than a social profile or a page that hasn't updated in a very long time.

I think everyone struggles with this though. For those that do have a lot of websites/businesses. I think there are some social media management tools out there that take this into consideration and let you add multiple social profiles and things to them so you can schedule posts and updates to all of them for weeks/months in advance.

I personally haven't used any myself but doesn't Buffer or Hootsuite allow this? In any case, that would probably mean upgrading your plan on those sites to get that feature and that could eat into your earnings before you're even earning with your sites.

So I'm interested to see what other people have to say about this. Social Network Overload - when is enough enough?

Oh yes Mike I have to use a social media tool! I currently use Mass Planner and it is amazing and lets me do so much. The fact is though that I still have to check each and every profile because it would look awful if people are engaging with me and I am not bothering to reply!

I can manage the social networks I have now but so many people are now saying I should also start with StumbleUpon and you know what I just don't think I can. There is a limit to what one person can do.

If I had staff maybe I could get someone to manage all the social networks but as it is I just can't get to it.

Wow you are about to manage 6 different social networks while I still can't find time for two of them. Social Network Overload - when is enough enough? Currently I'm using only Insta and Pinterest, and I'm trying to revive an old fb page which would be really cool if can do it. The only thing that I need to do is setting up a few automated scripts, but I'm not sure as I don't want my account to be classified as spammer account. However, I think I'm in a position where automated scripts are the only way.

Now as for your question, personally I would stick only to social media sites where my post are giving results that I want, now I'm not saying that all social medias has the same popularity, but it's better to keep only active accounts.

Thanks Procoder, yeah after reading all these posts I should draw the line right now LOL

I just wanted to see what everyone else here thought because you know I keep coming across someone raving about something new and trying to get me to join up and I want to scream!

Pardon me for this comment but no offense meant. I admire people who can spend their whole waking hours working online. That is the direction that we are going, e-commerce, online shopping, anything online can mean money. But for those who spend so much time in the internet, my first concern is the eyes, they can be strained by the continuous stare at the screen. Next concern is the mental fatigue. I am saying this because I experience eye strain and mental fatigue when I am on the internet for more than 2 hours. When I get off, it is like feeling exhausted. I don't know if it is stress or just physical fatigue but definitely, I get so tired from too much internet.

If you have a lot of websites and lot of social media profiles, it will become impossible to promote your websites regularly on multiple social media sites. I am facing this difficulty. I have 10 websites, I am present on facebook, twitter, pinterest, Google plus, linkedin, and stumbleupon. It is difficult to post every day on these sites. I have 6 pages on facebook alone, I have two twitter accounts and two pinterest accounts.
If I spend a lot of time on social media promotion, I will have less time to build contents. There are two options, either to use a service like Hootsuit and automate social media promotion or hire someone to work for me. Both of these options require investment.
