Having hyperlinks on your pages is actually a Good ranking signal, even if you link to your own pages, especially if the page you link too is relevant and can help users even more.

Hi well it's kind of a no brainer really. Backlinks are important for SEO whether they are hyperlinked or not. They still have value and are looked at like a "vote" for your site. Without backlinks (votes), pointing to your site, it would be much harder to get good rankings. You can get good rankings through having good content, good on page SEO, site structure etc. But good content and good site design naturally picks up backlinks anyway. And in time, that brings good rankings. Whether those backlinks are just non-hyperlinked URLs or they are hyperlinked URLs to your site. They all help increase the authority of your site in the SERPs. I say all but not all backlinks are created equal. Some are more valuable than others. Some have no real value at all. Some are somewhere in the middle. A good high quality backlink would be a link from a site that is in the same niche industry as you're in and would be on a high traffic page where people can see it and click on it. A low value backlink would be a link that isn't hyperlinked and is on a page which has no traffic. Or is a nofollow link or something. It could be a valuable link to have even if it was no follow provided it was on a high traffic page where people can see it and or it was from a site that was in the same niche / industry that your site is in.

Mike has really summed it up here for you.

I think the important thing is to have a mix of different link types so it looks natural. If all your links are do follow and all from high authority websites with high traffic then this is not going to look natural is it?

In addition it is important to have your link building done slowly over time, not a huge amount of backlinks at once.

Another thing that is important is to have some links directly to your main url and then a mix of links to your posts.

I like your advice about building your links slowly over time. Some users have the tendency to build up their backlinks all at once as if there is no tomorrow. And spreading the backlinks need not be focused. To me, link buiding is like planting but not sowing the seeds all at the same time. Maybe for today, you can do 5 posts in social media, 2 in forums and 2 in blogs. That will do for now and tomorrow, you find another venue for your link building.
