How To Promote Yourself to Entrepreneurial Success

An excessive number of business visionaries I know still believe that their incredible idea will carry their startup. However most financial specialists concur that the idea is worth nothing alone, and it's the business person's execution that matters. That basically means that offering yourself is more essential than offering your idea.

The same goes for both online and offline businesses.

As a freelancer I've been in contact with numerous people over the years. Most of them are newcomers and most of them doesn't have a clue where to begin. - I try to guide them and I try to tutor these people, both through chat, mail or inbox conversations. However, even if most of these people doesn't have a clue of what to do or how to do it, some of them are sitting on a goldmine without taking necessary actions to put their business on the map.

That's the main reason I started my business. - Brand building.

Although I don't work with super large companies such as Microsoft or McDonald's, I still work for multiple clients. All of them have great ideas but none of them knows how to reach out to people. - And that's where I come in.

My work is usually very easy, and all of them could be doing it themselves, but they pay me to do it, as I've been doing it for years, and I don't mind doing the boring tasks. - And it often comes down to time. - Most of my clients doesn't have enough time to do what I do, so they hire me.

What I want to share with you today is this:

An "idea" is just the beginning. Use your business idea to kick start your relationships with co-founders, investors, customers and business partners. Your ability to promote yourself and learn from these will determine your ultimate success.
Pursue skills you don't have right now. A U.S. Department of Education study shows that soft, interpersonal skills have become more important for success than hard, or technical, skills. Entrepreneurs need to have leadership skills, as well as an ability to work in teams and listen. Coaching skills, which you can learn from advisors and networking with peers, are also a plus.
Polish your reputation, as it's your best asset. Your CEO title might be good for your ego, but in the grand scheme of things, what matters more is how much people trust you, whom you know, who knows about you, and the aura you give off around you. What other people think you can do is more important than what you have done.
Your personal life is now public. With the internet and social networks, things you do in your personal life can affect your success in a big way. Manage your whole image, rather than ignore it. Even the smallest things, like how you behave, your online presence -- or lack of it -- and whom you associate with can help build your brand or tear it down.
Build a positive presence in new media. There are plenty of benefits to new media, if you maintain a positive presence. Your online social networks enable you to build your reputation, connect with people who have interests similar to yours, find educational opportunities and put you in touch with people who can help your startup.
Play nice with people of all ages. The combination of economic need and increasing life spans is keeping everyone in the workplace longer. As a result, you'll need to work well with people of all ages. Each generation tends to communicate differently and offers a different view of the marketplace.
The one with the most connections wins. We have moved from an information economy to a social one. It's less about what you know (Google search will help you in seconds), and more about whether you can work with other people to solve problems. If you don't get and stay connected, you'll quickly become irrelevant.
Just one person can change your life. Remember the rule of one? All you need is that one investor, that one major customer or that one distributor to keep you ahead of competitors. It's up to you to get that key person on board to support your business. Self-promotion in the right way can make all the difference.
Hours are out, accomplishments are in. If you want to grow your business, stop thinking about how many hours you work, and aim for more milestones and traction. Success is more results, not more work. Measure your results and promote them. Help others realize your value.
Your startup is in your hands. Be accountable for your own business success, and take charge of your life. Look for win-win business relationships, since people won't help you if you are not helping them. If you aren't learning and growing, you have nothing to promote and aren't benefitting anyone.

The challenge for all entrepreneurs is to gain visibility and show value without bragging and coming off as self-centered. Take personal credit where credit is due, but also share the successes of the team and the business milestones with everyone Success leverages success.

Thanks Andre for a great post.

I love what you have said about your personal life becoming public. In this day and age even if you are just applying for a job somewhere and not starting an online career you could find the company researching you on social media and deciding not to give you an interview based on your online activities!

The rule of one also applies the other way. One person can make you and one person can also break you too! So it is important to always conduct yourself professionally and with care no matter who you are dealing with.

This is a really inspiring and motivational post Andre thanks for sharing it with us. Those points are all what I would call "words to live by". They were all said by people who have gone from zero to hero. From the bottom to the top. And those are the people that we should most listen to for advice. Someone told me once, there are two types of people in the world. There's those that learn from their own mistakes. Then there's clever people that learn from other peoples mistakes. I don't know how true that is since we all make mistakes and part of learning to be successful is learning from your mistakes. In fact, mistakes aren't really mistakes at all if you look at them in the right way. They are lessons and lessons are valuable tools that can help us to succeed in life. All these people are what I would call clever people that have learned both from their own mistakes and from the mistakes of other people and applied them to their own life in one way or another.

It's very true what you say though. First you must have an idea or a vision. Then you need to take that idea and vision from concept to a working reality. It's not always easy to do that but if you learn from these tips and apply them to your idea/vision, you will have a better chance of taking them from conceptual idea and vision to a working reality!

Be nice to people. I agree with that. Interaction with a smile is one trick that sales people exploit. You cannot be wrong with a positive attitude and dealing with people is easier than when you are very formal. As a business person, positivity is the name of the game so you need to master those tricks that are time tested.

Great tips you have got there.I believe in the world of business,determination is the watchword.Be determined to succeed and every other thing would fall into place.Business success is about humans treat them like kings for them to help you accomplish your purpose.Most time we just need one good customer or client to catapult us.if our service or product was good then we will get more sales from the referrals of that one good client or customer.
