Domain authority and how it works. Do you need to increase yours?

Most of us have heard of Domain Authority or have seen it abbreviated as DA. It's usually followed by a number which shows the level of the domain authority such as DA73. Currently the highest domain authority a website can have is DA100 and that's mainly because you can't really go above 100% and the scale 1 to 100 is pretty simple for anyone to understand.

Moz had a domain authority metric which basically is an aggregated score which measures how big of an authrity, or how strong, your website is compared to your competition and pretty much any other website out there. You can check your competitors domain authority to check and see what you will have to overcome in the SERPs (search engine results pages) and how difficult the journey would be. For example, if you're a DA20 and your competitor is a DA70 then you have a big gap between you and them and it'll be pretty tough. It can be done, but it will take time and a good amount of effort. I would suggest targeting low competition keywords until you can increase your domain authority and then go after the more difficult keywords when you bridge the DA gap.

Another great thing about domain authority is that it can help you determine if you should try and obtain a backlink from that website. Lower DA sites won't boost you as much in the SERPs as a high DA site. This is due to the higher DA website linking to you giving you basically what is seen as a vote. It's like the site is saying "Hey Google! These guys are pretty awesome!"

To increase your own domain authority you'll need to target other high DA websites and get your links on there. You'll most likely have to do this manually since a lot of the better websites will have spam guards in place which will stop any kind of software from posting. Just post great content and build your profile over time, then get some links into your posts and you shouldn't get banned

Domain Authority metrics has started to appear after Google Page Rank was put to death, as long as we had Google Page Rank up and running few metrics were around and few people trusted anything but Page Rank. Hell, even now there are people looking to buy "High PR backlinks" or SEO freelancers offering such services stating that they offer high quality backlinks with top PR.

When it comes to checking DAs I usually go with Moz or Ahrefs, but have very good metrics algorithm and you can figure out pretty easily how much weight a website or a page haves.

Thanks Razzy. I had quite good domain authority last year and then I changed my website and did away with my subdomain which was a really strong website... not my domain authority has plummeted to almost nothing.

I am busy trying to build that up. I had Abid redo my website so the speed now is good and I am now focusing on getting new content up and building some backlinks on my own. I will soon start placing some orders with Barry as soon as I can afford it.

I was seriously bummed seeing my domain authority going from about 30 to 2 in such a short space of time... but I did hardly any work on that website this year until recently so I know I can build it up again over time.

If you have any "white hat seo hacks" let me know LOL

What I understand with domain authority is the overall evaluation of the website that includes the design and contents. In other words, it is like giving a rating to the quality of the website in several criteria as I had mentioned. And that quality will give the domain the authority which is an impression based on the rating. I hope I am correct on this assumption otherwise, please explain more for the benefit of the others.
