    One-Time Purchase or Subscription software? Which you prefer?

    As a software programmer I’ve created only one time purchase software so far, for those who don’t know, one-time purchase software it means that you’ll pay only one time to get the full lifetime licensed software. When it comes to users one-time purchase softwares seems to be more preferable by them, as most of them hate the licensing part.


    I think that,both one-time and subscription software have its cons and pros, one-time software does not generate a lot of money as the subscription do, but on the other side they don’t need much cost and time to manage them.

    I’m trying to create new tools and software that people need, but I would like to hear your opinions about softwares and which type of them you prefer, and if you have any experience with subscriptions softwares feel free to share it.

    Well i also develop software and sell license keys as one time payment. Never actually even thought of subscription like yearly licenses or so. Right now i am not even sure if that is right idea... Also depend on which licensing system you use and if it support timely licenses. If i do subscription with my current system, i would need to switch off licenses manually, so it would be messy job for me...

    i actually thought of another way of making more money, like selling one time payment software, then after sell additional upgrades and plugins for the same, but didn't start on such project yet One-Time Purchase or Subscription software? Which you prefer?

    Yeah I'm doing the same thing, but I was thinking to create something for subscription softwares, tbh I'm still unsure how I would do that but it doesn't seem to hard to implement it. However, it's something new and it would take some time to set up. And btw, selling additional upgrades seems a great idea too.

    For me, it really depends on the software, what my needs are for using it, how much use I'll get out of it, and whether or not that use will be really helpful to me for ongoing reasons. If it is, and the price is reasonable, I don't mind paying a subscription for it. If and only if my use of it is going to be rewarding for me so that I can pay for the subscription and still make a profit at the end of the month from using it.

    I think that's how a lot of people determine paying a subscription fee for a product, service or software. Obviously if it was going to cost me more money per month to pay for the subscription and keep it going than I was able to make from using it per month that wouldn't be good.

    But generally, I prefer to pay a one off price for it and get updates too. Some software developers do that but only give you a certain amount of updates or for a certain duration and you have to pay more to get the updates. I don't like doing that and would rather pay a little more to get the software and receive the ongoing updates for as many years as I was using it, whenever I needed it.

    I think that's also why a lot of software devs sell their software for a one off price and provide free ongoing support and updates. It makes it much more attractive and they can set a price for it from the start that might cover free updates and any support needed, at any time. One-Time Purchase or Subscription software?     Thanks for your reply Mike! Providing support and free updates is the most important thing when it comes to softwares, and yes you're right because doing this attract more people to buy your product, I'm trying to do the same thing and I think I'm doing fine so far.

    It depends on the product, but personally I'm selling them with fixed price. However, I would like to sell a subscription product just to see how it goes.

    Procoder I was just looking into buying some plugins for my new website and it looks like I buy them upfront and I get support for 6 months or I can pay for a 6 month support extension and thereafter there are yearly support extensions... for as long as this seller decides to maintain these plugins.

    I don't know how I feel about that because what happens if I buy them and suddenly the seller decides not to provide anymore support, those plugins are redundant... these plugins would be key to my website so I am now hesitant to buy.

    Is this normal?

    I don't think that will happen, I mean if he is providing support for these plugins then he will deliver to you exactly what he said, but it also depends on the type of support that he is offering, some of them provide only installation support and not updates. So, make sure to double check the description of these plugins, or better you can talk directly with the seller.

    Yes true, maybe I should ask everyone here about those plugins. I want to do something very specific with a website I am about to build but I am not quite sure how to go about it to be honest.

    I like both for different reasons.

    If I am paying a monthly fee to use software it is not a huge upfront expense in one go, this makes me more likely to buy it because of the obvious budgeting reasons plus very often subscription services have a free or very low cost trial period so I can try before I buy. I am always hesitant to try something new.

    Then the next thing is that if I am paying monthly I am sure to get support if I encounter any problems. I often wonder how much support (or lack thereof) I would get it I buy something and I have a problem.

    Of course if the software is brilliant and I trust the seller to give me great after sales support, and of course if I have the money available then it would be nice to pay once off.

    Over all I think I prefer subscription services.

    Thanks for your reply Lynne! I'm not selling anything with subscription, at least not for now, but I personally provide support after sales to all of my buyers if they need help with something.

    It depends on the software, but in the most cases softwares that are with monthly subscriptions or year , are those softwares which need a lot of updates and are always on change.

    For example, if it's a software related to social networks or anything related to internet, it's impossible to sell it with fixed price, because everything depends on the social media site. If they will change its algorithm, then you should do the same thing in order to keep your software running correctly.

    Well, here is my take on this. Usually, one-time purchase tools are not really helpful, sure some may be, but from my experience, they're pretty cheap and don't usually do much, also they tend to have more bugs and nobody seems to care about updating and improving them that much or compared with the monthly subscription based tools.

    My favorite plan would be to pay for the tool annually. This usually ensures that updates are constantly developed since you want your customers to buy the tool next year. As far as price goes, well depends on the functionalities you offer, but for me at least, under 100 bucks is good enough to buy, if the tool is simple, don't and doesn't offer much, make it way more cheap and I bet people will be happy.

    I get what you mean, but it really depends on the software and its function, for example products that I'm selling are one-time purchase, and one of them need regularly updates because it's a tool that is internet related, so I'm providing free updates to all my customers even though the software is one-time purchase.

    But also I would say that depends on its developer, personally I release new updates every few months in order to keep it stable.

    Subscription softwares are more advanced if we refer to functions, also they need a lot of time to manage them, so because of this they cost more than one-time purchases softwares.

    I prefer One-Time purchases. I guess I could say it's much more convenient for me, since a good software doesn't get outdated easily anyways. Although the subscription ones (or at least those that I've seen) were offered a lot cheaper, I think in the long run I would be spending much more on the subscription softwares rather than just buy it once and use it forever.

    I think one off purchases were common with the desktop software. And now that everything is going with the cloud software. I am sure that not a lot of people can make use of the subscription model. You can see that some of the time such type of the subscription model does not work for the economical reasons. And that's something we have to consider as well. I have tried to understand this with effort though.

    If you want to make short term money then one time purchase plans are better. And if you want long term work, and money then surely subscription based plans work. I have seen some companies closing with one time purchase. And some companies thriving with the subscription. And vice versa also happens. It depends on how your audience is going to react on that part. I have seen for some subscription method works out just fine.

    it all depends on your users but personally I will go for subscription so that I might be getting money all the time not just a one time off thing.
