    How to compress an MP4 video?

    I have just purchased a nice Canon video camera and I have taken some videos that I need to upload to social media and to Youtube but the video size is way too large.

    The videos are MP4. Can anyone please recommend an easy way to compress these videos for me?

    Hi Lynne. You can either do this offline using some video compression software. Or you can do it online using an online compression site.

    To do this offline on your Windows PC.

    You can try various software for it. But I'll recommend to you iSkysoft iMedia Converter Deluxe. It's a free Windows compression software app. It's very easy to use and has a lot of features but should be perfect for your needs.

    MacX Video Converter Pro is another free Windows compression software, despite it saying MacX in the name. There is both a MAC and a Windows version of this software that can do it for you without too much of a learning curve needed.

    In case those aren't going to do it. There is a free video compressor software at freevideocompressor.com you can download and install and try. The interface seems very easy to use and lets you set compression size of your video.

    To do this online.

    You can make use of some free online video compression software sites.

    Check out clipchamp.com you can do it via that site by uploading it and then it will do it for you and you can download a slightly smaller version of it.

    And check out cloudconvert.com It lets you convert just about anything to anything and that includes MP4 files. Although I'm not sure how well it will compress it for you but it's worth a look.

    Okay I'll leave you with those sites and softwares for now. Should be enough to help you do it but let us know if you need more recommendations.

    Mike thank you so much for this list! iSkysoft iMedia Converter Deluxe sucked because the free version only gives you 1/3 of your video, it just cuts off the rest!

    I downloaded MacX Video Converter Pro and it took ages and it was just a free trial, you cant use it for free and I can't remember what the other reason was but I uninstalled it....

    FreeVideoCompressor downloaded nice and fast and it wouldn't work for any of my videos, it just gave me an error message every time.

    I had a look at ClipChamp but it looked confusing so I went to CloudConvert and it did a good job nice for me... shew what a mission LOL. ClipChamp allows 5 jobs a month on the free version and then it is only $8 a month for the paid account.

    I think I need to follow Procoder's advice and change the settings on my video camera to avoid this issue completely in future :LOL

    Thanks for that great list of options, I guess each person has something that they like and that works for them. I enjoyed CloudConvert the most so I have bookmarked that websites for future use.

    If they are too big, then the quality should be super high. Sometimes it's better to change the resolution from your camera option, instead of compressing them with softwares, because compressing will reduce the original quality.

    However, you can use a software called "handbrake" which is completely free, and it's very easy to use. And make sure to check the box "Web optimized"

    Thanks, yes I think you are very wise Procoder! I will play around with the camera settings today so I don't have to mess around with compressing any videos in future. It took up my entire day yesterday to sort out 5 short videos!

    I came right with CloudConvert but I will check out Handbrake for future use. I appreciate the help!

    You're welcome Lynne! Depends on the video, and the platforms where you want to upload it, but 720p should be good for social media like facebook and twitter.

    Oooh I don't know what size it is on now. I found a setting that had different quality options so I chose the one below where it was...don't know what it was called though LOL.

    I then took a few videos and the size was so much smaller. I uploaded some of those to social media and it was perfect. So thank you, that was the most valuable advice I got. I can't believe how silly I am not to have thought of that.

    All those videos have been compressed and uploaded and all future videos will just be the right size from now on How to compress an MP4 video?

    Handbrake https://handbrake.fr/ works great, but you have to choose various settings, which could be difficult if you don't know much about encoding video. Trial and error till you find a great set of settings for your needs.

    Thanks, I will check them out for future use. I did come right yesterday with CloudConvert that Mike suggested but I they only have 5 free jobs a month and I used all of those yesterday already LOL

    You need to check out for a video compressor software in the offline to be able to compress the video that you want to upload. I wish you the best on it anyway.
