Duplicate content means the same content has already been posted somewhere on the net before you post it.
It may be 1% to 100% duplicate.
You may check it through a website "copyscape" just to know that if your content is duplicate or what % of it is duplicate.

You may not prevent it, but can get a check when others copy your content by triggering a mail through copyscape

You can prevent duplicate content on your website if you are checking the content before uploading it. Duplicate means it is a copy, in part or in full, so you have to be aware of that. If you want to upload again the same subject then you need to rewrite it so that it will not be a duplicate. There should be no same sentence as the original otherwise that may be considered duplicate copy.
