I get a lot of people asking me what I do for income and my basic response is usually something along the lines of "I work online helping website owners generate more traffic and sales" which is true, but a vague response of what I really do. But I didn't start doing this and that's why I'm posting this discussion 
How did you get started working with websites?
I myself started playing around with websites in 2002 or 2003 and got pulled in because I read something that said "Make $500 a day by just posting ads on websites!" and I opened my wallet and spent $297 on a sh*tty system that didn't teach me anything except for what Google adsense was.
After I attempted to get my refund, which was almost impossible to do because of how they set everything up, I realized that I had to optimize my websites in order to get higher rankings and then get clicks on my adsense advertisements in order to make any money. So I started learning on page and off page optimization, or SEO.
Learning SEO over the next few years while still working a full time job was pretty brutal. I would work 8 to 10 hours a day and come home to work another 3 to 4 and not get paid for it. But I think it was worth it in the end because I started making a few bucks here and there on my websites after they started getting ranked.
After I was proficient in SEO techniques and methods I began to sell my own SEO services to people who needed help. I did pretty well with this until Google banned me from Adwords. I literally went from making $1,000 a day with a $50 a day investment into Adwords. Not a bad ROI, right? After I got banned I began scurrying around to figure out how to generate the most amount of high quality leads since I couldn't use the biggest PPC platform anymore. I started working around on LinkedIn and other PPC platforms but it just never was the same
Fast forward to today and I now work online full time and I'm still doing SEO for clients and I have a few services that make me some passive income

I am a Navigator on merchant ships so i can't work full time but whenever I have the chance i like to feel my laptop's keyboards.

Well Everett, yeah on some vessels there is a full time internet connection. Starting 2017 it will be compulsory to have full time internet connection on ships. Anyway, a Navigator is one of the Officers who is "driving" the ship, while is en route to some port.
It's a demanding job which implies a lot of things but it's also an interesting way to build up your character and test yourself in critical situations ( keep in mind that, during storms, you don't have where to run :)) )

Back in about 1998, I used to be a publican and ran a pub/restaurant. That was when the Internet sort of first came out and we had a PC to do all the orders on like stock taking, forecasts and things like that. I think it was running on Windows 98 and we had AOL Internet. Websites were very primitive back then but I was learning Desktop Publishing as wanted to do something else to further my career (you can only get so far being a publican). It was then that I started tinkering with websites. I used to look at the source code and was intrigued by the way HTML worked. I started learning HTML and coded a few slap-up sites together. They were like online menus for our restaurant. After this I created our pubs first website and put it online. I can't remember who my web host was now but it was a lot different back then. I don't think I had Cpanel or anything like that which most good web hosts have today. Anyway I ended up meeting a girl and got out of it for a while and was working in a completely different job that had nothing to do with cooking or desktop publishing so never done anything for a few years. Then in about 2001 I started working for some finance company where we had our own PC and this system to log calls and orders onto it. I used to get bored and would again check out how the company site worked by viewing the source code of it and that. They saw I was doing it and rather than ask me to step into the office to tell me off, they asked me if I knew about web design and if I could make a website up. I told them I knew a little about how it work and could probably do so. They gave me this plan of a site they wanted. It was meant to be some dating site. But I only really knew a little HTML and didn't know about databases and all that. But I was still able to put a template together. I think I downloaded some HTML templates and basically just modified them using Photoshop to change the images around and used some free flash button builder site to make these cool impressive flash buttons that exploded when you hovered over them lol. From there on I started dabbling in making my own HTML templates from scratch although looking back they were very very basic and primitive but I did manage to sell a few of them to some guys on some forum although can't remember what it was now. I remember starting some gfx forum with an online buddy and we'd share each others knowledge of coding and design. From there I have basically tinkered with web design and coding ever since. These days I'm a bit more well versed in HTML and PHP and know a bit more about MYSQL databases and the like. But then came WordPress and it meant not having to know a single line of code myself as it was all built so you could just create a site without needing to know it. And since I was able to be a blogger, blog about things on my site without needing to know HTML or PHP or anything. I started doing that and have had a lot of success doing that promoting things like affiliate services and the like. So you can blame WordPress for me not furthering my coding knowledge and learning. But I've had a lot of success from it and have got this far without fully learning HTML/PHP etc etc.
I still like to learn it though in my spare time as you never truly stop learning when it comes to these things. :)

I got started when I wanted to create my own online game. I wanted a text-based MMORPG game, think along the lines of those mafia style type of games. Yeah, those. I had a problem though, I didn't know anything about coding, what code to use, and was entirely lost. I was around 16 when I first found something called "opensource code". And messed around with that until I broke the code. I didn't know how to fix the script, and I googled how to fix the errors, and this is when I taught myself how to write PHP code.
How long have you been playing with websites?
Since I was about 16. So about 7 to 8 years in total. I usually play around each day to make my coding skills better.
Are you working online full time or are you part time?
I tend to believe I work full time online. I can not go on the internet and not make money. I would feel as if I was wasting my time since I am not being paid to have fun.
