This post is part of the series: Social media marketing "advices" that simply don't work
As the titles say, having the same piece of content posted on all of your social media platforms at once is not a good idea.
Every platform is different and has its own unique users and overall "attitude", meaning things that have a good Engaging on Twitter, may be very well ignored on Tumblr.
Myself, for example, don't really like linking my social media accounts together, I understand that automation is cool and you can basically share on all of them the same thing, but all of these "differences" will influence the quality and effectiveness of your content and how will it get perceived.
Not to mention the fact that different social platforms are accessed differently:

I do think that each platform needs a different plan of attack in order to succeed. Posting funny things on Pinterest or Instagram will probably work better than if you were to post them on LinkedIn where people are logging in to learn about business related things. Obviously LinkedIn is much more different than pinterest and Instagram, but some people will use software or systems to push out one article or post to all platforms and it just doesn't work like you said
Is automation good?
Yes and No. It's definitely good if you have to push out updates about your website and need to do it quick without logging in to each platform. It's not great if you don't know what you're doing and just push out memes to every platform thinking you're going to make $1,000+ a day because of it lol. Using third party systems to automate your social media marketing can definitely help you out a ton, if you do it right. If you use it carelessly then you could just be hurting your brand.
Or should we customize your content and posts for each platform?
You should definitely customize each post for the platform you want to target at the time. Like said above, you can't post the same thing on all the platforms and think you're going to succeed on all of them. You have to custom tailor your posts to fit the platform. LinkedIn will need a more business savvy post to work well and Instagram will need something funny or motivational to work. Tailor each post to the platform and don't look at it as a waste of time writing up unique posts
