    Social media marketing "advises" that simply don't work - Hashtags

    We've all heard them and seen them all over the place, social media marketing "tips" that are regurgitated time after time on blogs and in tutorials.

    So I'm going to share a list of "tricks" that actually DON'T work, because your time is precious and you should focus on things that actually increase your website's value.

    1. Hashtags - Are totally ineffective on Facebook and Google+. Of course, they may add some value on twitter but overusing them is a big mistake. The more hashtags you have, the fewer interactions you get.

    The above stats makes me wonder if you actually get MORE interaction with no hashtags whatsoever.

    Do you think hashtags benefit anyone? Do you get more interactions when having more hashtags or do you simply drop them altogether?

    Very interesting! I was reading something the other day that was saying how hashtags don't help one iota! How it's a very very small percentage of people who actually even use them when posting and an even smaller amount of people who search using them as well. They was saying how when most people search a site for something, they don't use hashtags, they just use keywords. I can't remember what the article was now or where I was reading it too. I think it came up on my Apple News Reader app on my iPhone. I'll have to try and dig it up and then post it here as it had some interesting stats in it about the numbers of people who do or don't use hashtags and how it's probably a pointless waste of time to even use them on some social networking sites. I think they were Facebook and Google+ as well. Mind you, that said, I think they can still help. Both for ranking purposes and to help make your content more discoverable.     Yes it is interesting Mike and so many people say that hashtagging is like THE thing. I throw a couple in here and there just because you never know really.

    I do use them a lot more for Twitter and I do think they make a difference there. I have seen how if I follow something that is trending and chuck in that hashtag in a tweet then I sometimes get a really good response.

    I can't see those stats because the image above is broken. However, personally I think that hashtags are trend these days, and are being used widely on Facebook and Instagram , even though I admit that many of those people who use them don't know the real functions of hashtags.

    Hashtags should be short and meaningful, I hate when people use super long hashtags specially on Facebook, and that makes no sense at all.

    Or when they 'bomb' their post with crazy hashtags on Instagram, just to get some free likes or comments from bot accounts.

    Procoder I was told to use lots of hashtags wth Instagram, damn now I can't even remember where I got that advice from.... but I have just started using Instagram so I have been using hashtags... oh well we'll see what happens. So far it is going nicely, I just posted about it today.

    Hashtags are not a bad thing, they should be used as well because they will increase your post visibility, I said that because many people are overusing them, and then they end up spammed by bot accounts.

    For example, if you'll use tags like : #followme or #follow4follow #likeforfollow #follow4follow etc , you'll see a lot of random accounts following, commenting and liking your post, because they are bot accounts which target those hashtags.

    Oooh yes I have seen loads of profiles using those types of hashtags and it doesn't appeal to me at all.

    The picture was a graphic showing how the use of lots of hashtags will actually lower user interaction. Don't know what happened with the picture, I've tried edit it multiple times and always ends up broken.

    This is an interesting topic Cristian. I use hashtags for my social media marketing. I don't go wild with it like I've seen a lot of people do.
    And I dont use hash tags in every post. I find that they are very effective for Twitter marketing but when I use them on FAcebook I find hashtags to be a pain. In fact I am sure using hashtags on FAcebook has occasionally had a negative impact instead of a positive one.

    I think hashtags are for Twitter as you said and it still surprises me why many users of facebook try to use it. I mean it is only when people are much interested in finding a post that you hashtagged is when they will look out for it. Aside from that, hashtag does not work on facebook that much.

    Hashtags help your content to be grouped into certain categories. hashtags improve the visibility of your contents, however, using too many hashtags look spammy and people may never check the content that uses too many hashtags. You should understand hashtags as keywords that best describe your content, you should use hashtags as you use meta tags, Therefore 2-3 hashtags will do justice.

    I first heard the term hashtag sometime in 2013 but I didn’t mind it because for all I know, it is only used in Twitter. Am I right on this? But later on, I have been seeing posts on Facebook that included hashtag at the end of the caption. Most of the hashtags are about the feelings or emotion like #tired or #vibrant. Until now, I am still seeing many posts with hashtags that I assume are posts in Twitter with an echo in Facebook. But to be honest, I am quite confused about those hashtags. Thank you for clearing the matter to me. Now I know that hashtags are mere symbols in Facebook and has no other effect.
