What type of keywords do you target?

I am just wondering how you all target your keywords and how much emphasis you place on keyword research?

I was taught that keywords are vital to your website SEO and in turn your traffic, so ultimately your success right?

I have spent a lot of time doing keyword research because of this and I like to target keywords that have very little competition even if they have much less traffic because this makes sense to me.

I would rather target a keyword that I can achieve in ranking for than high traffic keywords that I possibly wont come close to ranking anywhere for.

How do you know when you can start targeting keywords that are a little harder to rank for but have more traffic?

Hey Lynne,

Mikey from a well known Barry team on here What type of keywords do you target?

Idealmike knows the score and I agree with him 100% on everything. While targeting low comp terms is great when starting out - your dream keywords should never be forgotten about. Even if you were to just target them a little as your site builds age and metrics it will stand you well in the long term.

The tips on research I agree with too - Google suggest is great as the terms showing up in there are terms that have been searched a lot recently. I also use ubbersuggest.org as well - good little free tool. Once you have a long list of these keywords its time to put them through your keyword software of choice to establish their competitiveness and average monthly search volume before making a decision on which ones are worth targeting.

Thanks Mikey What type of keywords do you target? Ok so I have only really focused on targeting low tail keywords with low search traffic since I ws trying to only go for keywords I thought I could rank for.

I am so chuffed with your feedback and suggestions on this query. Thanks so much for the free tool.

This has just changed my mindset on how I research my content and keywords. Perhaps I will see a huge change in traffic soon then, something I am really looking forward to.

google give priority on long tail keyword phrases.so keyword phrases should be long and meaning full accourding to your website. so you can research on google adword and choose medium weakly searched keywords.

You should be targeting them first! There's no time like the present! Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today! What type of keywords do you target? Sure it's good to go after the lesser tough competition keywords. But trust me, there is always room for one more at the top! Don't think that you wont be able to rank for those big terms as well in time. Age plays a large role in ranking! So having them tough competition keywords on your site from the early days can pay off later in time. First comes the content, then the backlinks. Then the rankings of some sort in time.

When doing keyword research, it all starts with a seed word. A single word that may have many long tails associated with it. It could be a single word or a double word that you're trying to rank for but usually ever single seed word has many long tail keyword phrases associated with it.

Let's say you're trying to rank for "baby walker". You can use Google Auto Suggest to get other ideas for other long tails that are most associated with that by just putting that into Google and pressing space, selecting a new word and doing the same again for different long tails of them. Google will always show the most associated and selected phrases to you based on your region.

We could select baby walker reviews and see what long tails there are for that.
What type of keywords do you target?

Or again for baby walker car and see what long tails it suggest for that.
What type of keywords do you target?
And the same again for other words auto suggested. You could then run these through Google Keyword Planner Tool to see if any are showing much search volume for or what the suggested CPC is although you can't rely on these numbers as gospel.

One way to check if a long tail keyword is a high competition and high search volume keyword is to just search it in Google. If there are any Sponsored Ads showing then you know that there are people putting money into it and then it's likely a high search volume / competition long tail keyword phrase.

But the trick is to try and find ways to merge these long tails into your content naturally without them looking like they've been forced in. And to use synonyms of them and all words around them and associated with them on that page too but that's just on-page SEO. What type of keywords do you target?

Thanks Mike! OK nice suggestions here, I really appreciate it. I can see now I will be changing my keyword research plan then... my brain is now turning big time. This is very different advice to what I was given by someone else, I was told to just keep targeting the low hanging fruit, long tail keywords... I was told it would all add up. Now I am going to change my game plan for a bit and see what happens.

Oh and there meet MikeyBeee, I now know his profile name here at SeoClerks... that is who I thought you might be LOL.... remember our chat the other day?

Thanks Socialpromot yes that is what I am currently doing, targeting relevant long tail keywords. Of course then often the amount of searches are much less, so keyword research takes quite a bit of time to find keywords that are worth searching for. Do you have any tips for finding high traffic keywords?

I usually target keywords that have 3 or more words never surpassing 5 words though. I've never really had success when trying to target keywords that had 5 words or more.. so I generally stick to just 3 keywords. Also, I don't use any keyword tool as my target is actually clones of another website, pretty hard to describe without showing an example.

I do quite fine though, and never really sought to target 5+ keywords, perhaps in the future I may get it a go, but for now i'm doing well. What type of keywords do you target?

So if you don't use a keyword tool you mean that you don't actually do any keyword research and you only target keyword phrases of 3 - 5 words long.

Oh that is interesting. I am going to try and stick to that when I do my next lot of keyword research. Thanks Everett, that has given me something to think about.

Lynne when you are saying competition, are you referring to Google Keyword planner metric? That doesn't need to be trusted. You have to actually look at Google's index and search result for that specific keyword, check out their content, check out their domain authority and page authority.

I personally do a lot of this type of research to figure out if the keyword I wasn’t to target should be targeted and most importantly HOW it should be targeted, because there are a lot of way to outrank the competition, even strong competition if you implement and do things they aren’t doing.

Thanks Cristian, no I don't use Google Keyword Planner because I found it quite tricky to figure out when I did try and use it a long time ago and also because I was told this is not based on all searches, only paid search...

So what tool do you use to find the number of avg. monthly searches a keyword can potentially have?

It looks like targeting a keyword is hard work because you need to spend time to search and to evaluate matters. With all the SEO methods that you have done on your site, do you really think that the keywords you had used were effective in terms of traffic and ranking? What if those keywords were not effective at all and your ranking increased because of other means like quality content and good backlink?
