I have been bouncing around with ideas for a new website and one of these ideas is to start a classifieds website for our area. We are a few small towns and I think it would really go down well to have our own little classifieds website.
How would I go about this and would it be really hard to set up? Does anyone know of any plugins that might do a huge part of the job for me?
What are the different ways I would be able to make money from a classifieds website?
Any good ideas that you can share with me?

I've launched several classified ad sites in the past and let me tell you, they can require a huge amount of work. One of the biggest time sucks is all the spam submissions you get. Especially if you're using an allinone classified ad script or plugin. I have used [url=https://www.appthemes.com/themes/classipress/]Classipress WordPress classified ad plugin[/url] before. I have the full version. But it just gets over run with automated spam submissions. Even if you use every trick in the book to try and thwart and prevent spam submissions. They always find a way around it. In the end, I got so fed up with all the spam, that I never worked on the site much promotion wise and wasn't earning anything with it to justify keeping it.
Another classified ad plugin for WordPress I've been experimenting with is [url=http://www.salephpscripts.com/wordpress_directory/demo/]Web 2.0 Directory plugin[/url]. This plugin has tons of features for the site owners and the site users like Google map placement, directory listing styles, tons of short codes etc. And I haven't received anywhere near as much spam using this one as I have/had with Classipress. Perhaps that one might be more suited to what you're looking for.
The best way to make money from a classified ad site is to sell premium listings. Listings that are bolded or highlighted or last longer etc. Most give you an ad that needs to be renewed every 30 days or something and are only basic (one image). But premium listings could last forever until-sold and allow you to add more images into your ad etc. But it's really really hard to sell premium listings on a classified ad site unless that site is a super popular classified ad site that is getting thousands of UV's a day.
The other option you have is to put ads on it. But most people use AdBlock today and you could get people doing all sorts of crap to your ads putting your Adsense account at risk (goes with the territory for these sorts of sites). But you also need to get a lot of traffic and have a lot of new ads appearing every day before people will use it anyway. You have to think, why they would use it when it's getting no traffic when they could just go and use a more popular and busy classified ad site that does.
Still that's not to say it can't be worth doing. Baby steps today, giant leaps and bounds tomorrow and all that.
But hope that's some food for thought for you anyway. :)

Thanks Mike, the beauty with our area is that there is hardly any advertising that is going on online, not even on Gumtree. And if you type in our area you just get ads from another town that is considered part of our area but is actually 150km away and I think this is part of the big problem. So I want to make the classifieds our area, specifically leaving out that town :)
I do believe there is a gap in the market for this. One thought I had is that I know quite a lot of people that own their own businesses here, so what I would do is approach them first and offer them prime "paid" spots for free for a certain amount of time. This will make it appear like they are advertising with me, so other businesses will be more keen to join either for free or a paid spot.
Then I also want to target people selling their own second hand goods so people can add little adverts for free for that.
I think I can do this and yes I know there will be some spam... for sure but that is just something I will have to work through :(

Actually i was running my own website as classified ads before by using WordPress and Classipress premium theme (as IdealMike mention) and this theme is really perfect solution for your needs. You get option to charge your members for adding classifieds or to make it free. You can probably read more about it on theme sale page. But i would recommend this theme if you looking to make your website in WordPress.
Monetizing such website is probably better if you let members add their ads free and find some local stores, restaurants, cafe bars etc. to sell some ad spaces because it will be local website anyway. Specially if you running this website as part of your business, it's even better if your advertisers can pay you and claim this expenses on their tax return, that's way is even easier to sell some ad space on such site. Try also to invite many local businesses to add free classifieds, then try to sell some "featured" spots to them. That's another thing you can do with this theme.

I was looking through wpmudev.org because they have a ton of great stuff for wordpress which would make it super easy for me to set up. I could literally just pay their membership fee, or use the free trial, download the plugins and set everything up pretty quick. I think everything would be under $100 and wpmudev lets you use their plugins for life
This is the plugin of theirs I was looking at: https://premium.wpmudev.org/projec...press-directory/
It basically makes your site similar to yellowpages where you can add a description of a business and people can log in to rate it.
I didn't begin this project because I've had a full plate of things to do for a while now
