Facebook and Unity Collaboration to Create a Desktop Gaming Platform!

Apparently Facebook is taking another step to expand their gaming service, as Unity announced they are collaborating with Facebook to create a downloadable desktop gaming platform like Steam. This is the first collaboration between Facebook and Unity, which is the largest gaming development platform.

According to Unity Announcement :

Unity and Facebook are collaborating to build new functionality into Unity that streamlines the process for exporting and publishing games onto Facebook. This will allow Unity developers to quickly deliver their games to the millions of people who enjoy playing Facebook-connected games every month, and the chance to participate in an ecosystem that paid out over $2.5 billion to just web-game developers in 2015 alone.

These days, both of them are really giant companies and definitely their product should be very interesting, and something that gamers would love. However, it doesn’t mean that they will succeed with this product, as they have a big wall ahead called “Steam”

Awesome. Hopefully we'll see some really cool games from it. I would imagine that the really cool ones will have in-game purchases offered to us around every corner which is how and where they make their money from. I don't mind that as long as I don't "need" it to continue playing and enjoying that game. It's nice to have it as an option though in some games to give you more of an advantage perhaps. But I've seen some pretty aggressive in-game purchase promotions and it's not cool. It creates a bad UX for the players who don't mind putting up with occasional in-game purchase promotions and interstitial ads provided they can just click the x button and continue playing.

But Unity is a great engine and for a while, Firefox has been a bit of a nightmare for them disabling running natively in the browser so perhaps this might help them to regain many of the players they lost when that happened that they've been struggling to recoup ever since.

I think Steam is a steam punk powered power house of a brand and still has a infinite amount of resources to create awesome games that will probably be around for many years to come. But Unity is almost a house name as they are now and securing this place with Facebook will put them more on the map.

I've always seen Steam as a PC game developer where as Unity is more web games that run in the browser. Perhaps they should all team up together and come up with games that run both in browsers and on Windows / Mac / Unix computers too.

That could be cool but that would be like M$ pairing up with Apple. Not going to happen? lol

This collaboration will come up with something good i think. And yeah almost all games offer to users a way to unlock their levels or to buy products to improve their gaming experience, this is understandable as gaming is like any other business.

Steam is really great and popular platform, but on the other side they are powerful too, so..definitely this would be very interesting to see them competing with each other.

Microsoft and Apple? Hmm sounds impossible and I think that will never happen, but money can change everything these days..Who knows..?

I'm not a gamer and I am not really familiar with Steam or Unity... that said I think Facebook is a massive platform so although you said Stean could be a massive challenge for their project I am sure Facebook teaming up with Unity will be cause for a bit of worry for Steam!

Depends on what games are they gonna develop and at what prices. Steam at the moment is king in this domain, cheap games, awesome platform. Then again, Steam is not really known to the general public and is more popular for gamers.

If Facebook manages to somehow implicate normal users (not gamers) into populating their new platform, well they have a big chance of taking over everything in time.
