Freelancers will work 60 hours a week so they don't have to work 40.

A lot of people ask me when I work and how much I work. My answers always confuse them because they're so use to working the typical 9 to 5 and having a boss. I work 60+ hours a week so that I don't have to work 40 hours a week and have to answer to my boss and my boss's boss. Every job I've ever had has had plenty of weak links in the chain in terms of how smart they are. I would be doing something that is more streamlined and affective but since it wasn't in the "rule book" they saw it as me going against authority... even though I would cut a ton of time of the project.

Anyway...

Working for myself is much more beneficial because I can do what I want, when I want. I can work for 3 hours and then play a video game for 3 hours if I want, then come back and work another 8 hours. That's not what usually happens, but I have done this in the past lol Freelancers will work 60 hours a week so they don

Working for a boss just doesn't suit some of us because we can't handle authority well. I know personally that if someone is telling me to do something just because they can, I'm going to get pissed off at them. I've had managers who would pull me off of a project or job and have me do something for them. That's not what would get me pissed off at them though. I would get mad because at the end of the day I would still be working on the original project or job and this manager would come back and be annoyed that I wasn't finished. I actually brought this up to the GM when we had an employee meeting and he wanted me to come find him after the meeting to tell him who the manager was. He didn't want me to out the manager right there lol. This kind of backfired though since the manager I outed was best friends with the other manager who wrote up the schedule, whoop! Didn't think that through very much. But I honestly didn't think that she would stoop to the level of running to her friend to reduce my hours enough and eventually giving me 0 hours.

In the end, the people who are working 60+ hours a week so they don't have to work 40 hours for a boss are in it for the freedom and less stress. I know that I do it so I can push my company as hard as I want and I don't have to answer to anyone who is as smart as a rock Freelancers will work 60 hours a week so they don

What do you guys and girls think?
Have you had the joy of working with a less than intelligent manager or boss and wanted to quit just because of them?
Have you been able to go full time freelancer and break the typical 9 to 5 work scenario?

Thanks,

Razzy

60 hours a week? Try 126! LOL. Because sometimes I am literally working from 9AM to 3AM (18 hours a day) at my PC. I'll take breaks in between of course. And sometimes I'll go play a video game for an hour or so or have a relaxing bath or something like that. But generally, I'm working very late into the early hours of the morning, get around 6 hours kip and then I'm up again early working away again. I do try to do a few things in the morning that aren't work related though. Do my washing, clean and tidy my room. Hoover up, put the washing up away that kind of thing. And sometimes I'll go out for a bit if it's nice and sit on the beach and watch the sun go down. But even then I'm usually working away on my mobile and writing things down in my notepad, ideas and things for possible projects, brain storming stuff and answering clients messages on here, emails etc stuff like that. Even when I'm not officially working, I'm still working lol.

But I'd rather do all of that than go back to working a menial office job for someone that doesn't really appreciate my hard work and thinks that the minimum wage I'm getting I should be more than happy with. Yeah right! I've worked in some miserable office jobs before as a clerk and filelist. One job my roles were to open and file the mail and I had an old Windows 98 computer. This was in and around 2004 when everyone was long using Windows XP. The computer kept crashing, it wouldn't print, and wouldn't save stuff and was laggy and buggy as hell. I kept telling them that if they upgraded the computer, I could get a lot more work done much faster and be more proficient. I even found them a very cheap one in a used PC magazine I had which was only about £75 or something and can pre-installed with Windows XP on it. There response was that they couldn't justify spending that much money on a new PC when the one I was using works fine! In the end I got so fed up with them not buying new stuff for the office that I handed in my notice and left that job.

That's when I went into telesales. That wasn't much better, I used to have a boss breathing down my neck constantly telling us to reach unrealistic targets. They used to pin a £20 note to the board or sometimes more and say whoever reaches their target first for today can take it home but hardly anyone ever did and they knew this yet would still do it everyday. It was only occasionally someone would get it.

Fast forward 10+ years and I've been working as a freelancer ever since. Although I've had a few part time jobs in that time as well. A part time chef and barman and a part time steward working at Goodwood. But through it all, I'll never want to go back to that sort of thing again and would rather be penniless than work in an office job for a boss that doesn't appreciate me and wont listen to good reason. OMG yes Razzy. I got into trouble once with the financial director of a multi million Rand company I worked for. I did a very important job - the purchasing for all the sites. I had to get everything to the sites and the office as fast and efficiently as possible. The financial ramifications if something was delivered late was huge. Plus some of the orders I placed were like over R100 000, so I had to work it with my suppliers to get the best possible prices. There was one scanner, at reception and it went to the receptionists computer.

I went and requested that they buy me my own printer/ scanner/ copier/ fax so that I did not have to rely on reception to do these things for me. I needed to be quick. It cost like R1000 (less than $100) and he refused. I threw such a wobbly, because it was ridiculous. Anyway it is things like that that drive me crazy. A boss that is hardly ever there, expecting me to save him thousands every day by working deals with suppliers but I can't even print in my own office or scan anything. GGRRR

Actually the boss I was working for the last 3 years, we started to not see eye to eye and it became very frustrating and a hard environment to work in. I quit at the beginning of this year.

I have actually been on Seoclerks for a few years now and have been able to completely supplement my 9-5 job with seoclerks....

I like it so much better not having to answer to someone or have someone telling me what to do all day long. I am my own boss and it is great! I work everyday but I get to work when I want and for how long I want! Nothing beats the freelance world!

Oh my, your post had me thinking of all the funny and stupid people I met over the years when I worked in offices. I hated having to nod and accept whatever they assigned me to do. I hated the fixed time of work. I wold find it really hard to get back to that life. Now I sometimes end up writing very early in the morning or very late at night. I work irregular hours when there is the need for it, but as long as it is flexible I am totally okay with it. I much prefer it this way!

As a full time freelancer here i'm working 12 hours a day, so 12 hours * 7 days = 84 hours / week.

84 hours a week it's too normal for me, but there are some days when i try to break the record so i end up working 19 hours/day. I start working around 9-10am in the morning till 4am (4am is my favorite time to sleep lol) So, from 19 hours a day i take a break for 5 hours, those hours are reserved only for sleep lol.

I don't think that I can keep up with working everyday for a firm that the manager tries to push me around unnecessarily. Yeah, I still have such a job to augment the earning that I get from freelancing, but I already have plans of getting better as a freelancer and quit when the right time presents itself.

I work 40 hours a week under a boss who also is under another boss. The job is stressful but the compensation is great. That's the primary consideration why I lasted for 30 years in that job. And when I retire, freelancing will be my main job and probably I would be working for longer hours. Right now, I understand that the online earnings are not that substantial.

I share your sentiments, working for oneself is very sweet and almost stress-free.I work all the time and it doesn't seem a job to me.I just love the idea of opening my laptop anyway and work begins.I don't need to be in a certain office or wear certain clothes or do things in a certain way neither do I need to met annoying colleagues or domineering Boss.My problem is to augment my skill and get the high paying jobs.

I do agree, most bosses are a pain. It's better to work long hours answering to no one but yourself than working short days but having a boss around to torture you.
