Agreed- a lot of effort should be put into making your pages "sticky" with things like videos etc.

Making the readers stay for long on a web page is a hard task for content writers because the interest of the readers vary from person to person. But I believe that if the content has information to share especially information based on the experience of a particular person then the reader will be somewhat interested. At the least the bounce rate will be better with an increased time spent on the web page.

Search engines track engagements on any website in order to up rank and down rank the website. Therefore, if there is no engagements, there will be high bounce rate. When the bounce rate is high, your website will be down ranked. One of the ways to tackle high bounce rate issue is by encouraging people to leave comments on your posts. You can join post exchange groups to generate comments for your website.

Yes, they do. They track all kinds of human behavior and how users are interacting with your content and website. Like any company, they are trying to fulfill the needs of their customers... searchers. The look for an indication that your content is reliable and popular. SO, bounce rate, page views, time on site... it all has an impact.

I believe that the bounce rate is taken into consideration by the search engines. The rationale behind that is related to the contents of the web page. When the bounce rate is high that means the user is not much interested especially when the bounce rate is very high. Just with that factor, the search engine can already gauge if the website is worthy of being included in the search list.
