Duplicate Content - what about product specifications?

I need some advice and assistance with some questions about duplicate content.

My first question is how do you deal with the issue of duplicate content when you need to give the specifications of a product? It is not always easy to re-write specs, especially when they get technical.

How do you personally deal with product specifications?

I have sometimes wanted to quote what someone has said and I have used the quote option on Wordpress.

I assumed that this was for using when you are quoting someone directly and you want Google not to see that as duplicate content. Is this correct or did I just make a silly assumption?

It will still be duplicate content whether it's quoted or not. But quoting it does show that you're not trying to pass it off as your own. But Google does NOT penalize you for using duplicate content taken from another site and used on your own. The duplicate content penalty is only when you are using the same content on your site in more than 2 places. But as long as you still have other unique content on that page. Then it wont think that you're trying to use that content only to rank with and even if it does, it will rank the first original version of that content higher than yours. That's why if you use duplicate content on your site from some other site. You should add more unique content to that page too.

Mike I heard that using content from another website on your website is considered duplicate content. I heard too that this could damage my website and get it penalized by Google.

Are you saying that if I copy a whole post by someone else and publish that on my website nothing will happen to me other than their content being ranked higher than mine?

I am confused now? But I suppose it doesn't really matter because I don't copy content and if someone copies mine they won't be able to outrank me.

Ok but back to my original problem.... so you are saying I can write some original content about the product and then copy the actual specifications word for word and that is fine to do?

Because if I can do that then YAY it will make my life so much easier.

Yes it's duplicate content. But it's not going to get you penalized! People have been using other peoples content on their site for years. Think about how article sites work (or how they used to work). Someone would write an article about dog training, and all the webmasters/bloggers that had a site about dog training tips could go to that article site, search the new articles for dog training tips then find an article on it. Then they could take that article from that article site and use it on their own site. This is one of the main reasons article sites exist. So webmasters could find content for their blog. And the article writer could get a link as well (provided the person keeps the bio links intact).

That is correct that nothing will happen. Google will know which version of that content was the original. And it will invariably rank the original version of it higher by order that it was found. The article you put on your site may still rank and if its content that is related to your site then it's in the right place. But that's why you should use unique content because unique content ranks higher on its own.

And yes your products specs might be the same or slightly different. Different colour for example. Or different size or something. But provided you have unique content on each product page about that product. Such as how that product is different to the other very similar one etc. Then Google wont look at it and go okay, this is the exact same content as your other page. Your specs are the same, but each page has unique content on it so it can rank and index it for that.

I agree that a line inside quotation marks is an indication of a verbatim or literal presentation. And although it is a duplicate since it was just taken from its source, I don’t think it can be branded as copying. However, if you lift lines from another site and pass it off as your original content then you will have a problem. So just to be safe, it is best to enclose in quotations whatever excerpts you get and don’t forget to mention the site where it came from. That will be pretty safe against plagiarism.

Just leave a note explaining that said part of content is for standard product specifications and it's not the intention of the writer to copy it or the poster does not own the copyright of the specifications.
