Do you think offering giveaways or prize draws on your website works?

Do you think offering giveaways or prize draws on your website works?

Some websites offer giveaways or prize draws to their members to encourage them to stay active on their website. It may be a blog or a forum where they are offering the chance to win something for simply liking a Facebook or doing a small task. The advantage with this is that you offer something extra for your members which may make them loyal to your website and bookmark it. Normally, it will be some sort of cash incentive or something of good value, for example, iPhone or iPad. However, with the rise in scams, do you think this method may lead to people questioning the legitimacy of your offers? If you have proof that your offers are legitimate, then it may have a positive make members stay active. My main question is, do you think this method will increase the amount of traffic your website gets?

I have done a lot of competitions and give aways on one of my websites. It was an online baby store with a mommy blog and now it is just a mommy blog.

What I found is that at the time of the competition or the give away there is a lot of activity and engagement but as soon as it is over things die away very quickly.

I did loads of baby photo competitions which were very popular, the moms chomped at the bit for them and spent a lot of time on my website and on my social networks but as soon as the competitions were over they left. I also noticed that sales didn't really go up much either.

I found the competitions a huge amount of extra work and often not much in return.

The one big difference was to my subscribers list. Readers had to enter on my website and I had an option to check on the entry form to be added to my newsletter and so my subscribers increased quite nicely.

I am thinking of doing more baby competitions in the future when I have more time, now that I have Adsense it might be more profitable for me to do.

I'm actually launching a website that will review games and talk about everything the game I'm reviewing is about. Loads of content that will hopefully rank in the search engines after I do some off page SEO as well as the on page as I write and post.

I plan on doing a big giveaway each month. I want to giveaway a PS4 or Xbox1 each month to people who like our facebook page, instagram, or any social media platform. I'll randomly pick a winner each month and then see which console they want. I think it would be a great giveaway if I also added in something like "You must also share THIS post in order to gain access to the drawing" and the post will be of something like "Win a FREE PS4 or Xbox1 just for liking our page!" And after that I should be able to get the ball rolling lol Do you think offering giveaways or prize draws on your website works?

Free giveaways are always good, if you're giving away something that is of value. A free giveaway of you mentoring someone on how to set up a website wouldn't be as good as if you just set it up for them for free and hosted it as well lol Do you think offering giveaways or prize draws on your website works? People want free stuff, they don't want to learn. If you give them something that breaks whether it be something physical they can hold or a piece of software, they will get pissed off because they won't be able to use it. You'll just get bad reviews and we all know one bad review can kill a website.

Yes this can work well for any site provided it is done well and it can actually gain you some interest and keep people coming back to your site too. But it all depends how you go about it. Whether it's a contest/competition or free random prize draw giveaway.

And it would all depend on your site and it's current age/reputation and what it's giving away. If it's something really expensive like a car or even an iPad or something like that then generally the more expensive the item they can win, the more skeptic your readers may be. Especially if it's your sites very first contest/competition/prize draw etc. However if you've been known to do this before and there hasn't been anyway saying hey I did'nt get my prize all over your blog and social media pages, and they do actually get it. Then this will mean that more people will trust in and enter into that contest/competition or prize draw or whatever it is you're doing.

So it's all about the age and reputation your site already has. Even if you haven't done this before and you're a fairly big and trusted site by a lot of people and have been around a long time. Depending on the prize itself people may be skeptical and hesitant to enter. But obviously the more you do it, the more people will trust it, the more people will be posting on your site/blog and your social media pages "Hey thanks I got my prize today" that kind of thing then people are going to see that and enter your next contests/competitions etc! Gifts and prizes are a great incentive! They can do wonders if you play your cards right by having multiple marketing campaigns at once.

First of all, I think prizes like an iphone or ipad are overused and I personally don't believe any company that still offers them, especially on social media. The actual gift or prize should be something else.
  • If you have an online store you should give away free coupon codes, overall sales or actual products
  • If you have a service based website you should give away free services, maybe for a couple of months, or even years.
  • If you have marketplace website like SC for example, you should give actual credit to buyer, like Jordan did on numerous occasions. Sure you lose some money but you'll get people interested in buyer services.
  • If you have a blog and all that you have to offer is content, you should do some special giveaways for faithful readers or new readers. Give the special content that only they can see, stuff like that, things that will make them come back for more!

It works but not always. Let me illustrate this.
I have joined many sites just because I was receiving freebies. After I received my freebies, I never went back to that site. I have subscribed to many sites that offer freebies. I go to the site only when freebies are available. The intention of the owners of these sites was to hook me into their website against the freebies, however, it did not work. I am not visiting these sites even though I am receiving freebies.

Giveaways in any form is appreciated by the public. I have been seeing in Facebook raffles with a prize of an appliance or car. All the reader needed to do is to like the page and post a comment. Oh, it has thousands of comments and hundred thousand likes. Especially if the prize or giveaway is a good item, it will definitely attract people.

Freebies and prizes attract people, but do you think this actually work for the business owner. I mean you are giving freebies, but are you gaining anything in return. You gain 1000 subscribers for giving away something, will these subscribers drive sales and revenue? This is the main question the business owners need to think about.

I don't think this method can do much apart from a little percentage of sales and traffic. I think this concept works more for appreciating and rewarding existing customers and helping to retain than driving new customers or sales because it will be dashing people stuff that might not still patronize one's products or business.
