Do You Use: The Skyscraper Technique in Your Digital Marketing Endeavours?

The Skyscraper Technique

The Skyscraper Technique is a technique that's used to research and come up with new content ideas for content that is better than your competitors.

The way it works is you have to find the content that is ranking for the keywords you're targeting and then basically improve upon it and make it much better.

This could be through literally rewriting that content in your own way, expanding on areas in more detail and providing more information about it in a different and better way. You will have to find and identify weaknesses or shortfalls in that content and make it better and more useful than the original version is/was.

When you start doing this you'll soon start to see many ways in which you can make other websites content much better and more useful to the people that are searching for it. And while it can involve a fair bit of work, you'll be pleased when you start seeing how much more attention your better version gets by using the Skyscraper Technique!

Here's how to do the Skyscraper Technique in three easy steps.

  1. Research Ranking Content
You'll need to search for the top 10 sites ranking for the keywords you're looking for and then find one that you think you could improve upon and make a better version of.
  2. Improve It
Make that content better by rewriting it in your own words, make it longer or more relevant and add more details to it. Better bullet points and pictures etc.
  3. Rinse and Repeat
Once you've done this for one keyword, search again for another and do the same thing for another page.

When you adopt the skyscraper technique you will find that;
  • You have to do less research as the content is already written you just have to rewrite it!
  • You will be able to come up with many content ideas for new posts.
  • You will get more attention than the other blogs as your content is better!
  • You will find that your content gets more shares on social media.

And that is basically the Skyscraper Technique in a nutshell! Do You Use: The Skyscraper Technique in Your Digital Marketing Endeavours?

Hey Mike thanks again for bringing a new technique to my attention and of course for explaining how to go about it.

Yes I usually research my content before I start writing and checking out what other websites have written is part of this research. I never thought to use this research in the way that you have described though. I get that this is business and that it can be quite cut throat but I just don't like the idea of "literally rewriting that content in your own way"... maybe I am being a bit silly here but isn't that really the same as spinning content just not using software Do You Use: The Skyscraper Technique in Your Digital Marketing Endeavours?

I like to create my own unique content, and yes I get ideas and do research from other websites but this technique seems a little off to me. I'm sure it would get good rankings yes, but not sure this is a route I want to go.

Hi Lynne you're welcome that's great. Thanks for your question! So no, rewriting content is not the same as spinning it. Spinning content is a process that involves taking some already written content and running it through some spinning tool. It makes a very messy job of it and the outputted article(s) are ridiculously shabby with words added in that don't even make sense making the whole article not make any sense any more. Spinning by hand is a bit different though as you can be picky and choosy about which words to spin with which words you want. It takes longer but it produces much better spins. But yeah, and no, spinning articles is not the same as rewriting them. I'm not saying actually to necessarily rewrite them but rather use them as a basis and foundation for ideas to come up with but only, in a better, more detailed and advanced way making it much better than the original. That includes the images as well. And even video too. Because you can do this for videos too. Just find a video in your niche, watch it and think about how you can improve it and make it better. Maybe you can make it more livelier and not as dull to watch or you can cover things in more detail that video never. Do You Use: The Skyscraper Technique in Your Digital Marketing Endeavours?

Do check out the Moving Man Method as well which is very similar but also a very good way of building high quality backlinks to your site from relevant/related sites in your niche.

Pardon me for saying this – rewriting is not easy especially if you are an amateur. Take note that it is not the contents you are rewriting. An article that is spun is not advisable if you are not a good spinner because the reality will emerge that you have only copied that content. With keywords, I guess it is practically the same that if you are not highly skilled in rewriting keywords then it might backfire. I guess it is okay to check for the top keywords in a particular subject that can serve as your basis in creating a synonym keyword.
