Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

We all know that it is critical to analyze competitors, whatever service you are providing and regardless of the niche or line of business you are in. Your goal is to dominate your niche, and to do that you need to surpass your competitors. Besides you will also be able to see where they are doing well, and try to improve on that, and where they are not, and try to make the most out of that opportunity. So how do you analyze your competitors? Do you take this seriously? Are there any tools that you utilize to do such analysis?

Google Alerts! (google.co.uk/alerts)

Set up an alert for your competitors brand name or website domain or even some product they have which you have a similar product for. Then that way, whenever their brand name or website domain or a keyword related to their product is found by Google, you'll be told about it! That way, you can get to see virtually everything your competitors are doing, what links they're building, who they're networking with etc etc. From this you can basically do the same thing they are doing so that you're constantly one step behind them. Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

As for other competition analysis tools, you can check out mention.com. I believe they have a free trial which gives you 2 alerts and up to 3k mentions but I've never used it myself yet as I've always found Google Alerts more than enough to see what they're up to.

Another tool that lets you do a side-by-side comparison is fanpagekarma.com as it lets you analyze your and your competitors Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest accounts but it works best for Facebook fanpages. The sort of things it can show you is your competitors engagement & growth. What their most used content sources and keywords are. What their top posts, posting frequency, by day and time is and the post types they most make including some other metrics that can help you to get some good insight into how your competitor is doing social media marketing. Which is always useful. ;)

Thank you for your suggestions Mike. That was very helpful. Sometimes it feels a little bit like stalking, but in business it is ethical I guess. Google Alerts is indeed really helpful, but for those who are mainly based on social media (and there are many small businesses who rely on Facebook only) it is great that you suggested fanpagekarma.com.

i would have to say i agree with you elite writer i deal mike does have some great ideas and i have no doubt in my head that they are smart and effective ways to keep your eyes on the competition but your right it does have that sort of feeling that stalker feeling , as for fan page karma i did not even know about the site so i believe he did good on that im really social media based my self so with that being said it does help out , you got some good stuff mike really do

Thanks guys. Sharing is caring! I don't see it as stalking though. To me stalking only applies when you're stalking a certain person like a celebrity (Celebrity Stalkers). But when it comes to your competition or rivals, I see it as fair game! At the end of the day, business is business. And it's a dog eat dog world out there! They are probably doing the exact same or similar thing for their own competitors or rivals they are trying to outrank and outflank! And there's nothing illegal, immoral or unethical about doing this either. In effect it could even be considered flattery because you consider them big enough to find out what they're doing online. And as you happen to be in the same niche, doing the same thing as them. After all, they do say, imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery. Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Thanks Mike. I have set up some Google Alerts and played around a little with that but I haven't put too much emphasis on it.

Thanks for sharing those two other websites, I will have a look at them as soon as possible.

Sure thing Lynne! Yeah it's just set and forget more or less. I choose to prefer to receive a digest email of all the things it's found at the end of the day though in one email rather than "as its found". Otherwise you can end up with tons and tons of emails to sift through where as when they're all included in one email you can take your time to go through it and it's much easier to manage in your inbox! Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Yes one email would be great. I also get loads of emails and I get irritated sifting through everything.

I've always been a big fan of SimilarWeb for competitor analysis.

Here's the tip of the iceberg of features that they offer Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Visitors/Traffic - You can pretty much spy on your competitor to see a pretty close estimate on how much traffic they've been getting for the last 6 months. It will show if their traffic has increased or decreased, which is pretty awesome Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Engagement – This helps show the websites bounce rate which is helpful to figure out if people are actually staying on your competitors website. And we all know that a good bounce rate will help with your rankings because it shows Google, Yahoo! and Bing that people are staying on your website and reading multiple pages.

Traffic Sources – You can figure out where your competitor is getting their traffic from. You'll be able to determine what keywords they're getting the most traffic from and you can target them if you want.

Referring Sites – This will show you what websites are referring traffic to your competitor. You can see if it's from an ad, partnership, or affiliate which is pretty nice Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it? I've actually used this in the past to find super affiliates for my own websites Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Organic Keywords – This will obviously show exactly what keywords the competitor is ranking for in the search engines and sending traffic. They could be ranked for 1,000 keywords but only getting traffic from 10. If you know which 10 they're getting sales from, then you know what to target ;)

Paid Keywords – You can see which keywords your competition is willing to pay for to generate sales. You can determine which keywords are better to pay for than others. Don't waste your money on bad keywords.

Social – Social presence is a big thing now a days since more people are getting online. Social signals are difficult to track sometimes so using this feature will help relieve the stress lol. You'll be able to see what social platforms your competitor is getting traffic from. You can also check their pages to see what kind of content they're posting in order to get that traffic ;)

The only downside of SimilarWeb is that they aren't cheap. Their lowest priced plan is $199 a month. The other 2 packages they offer just say "Contact Me" where the price is suppose to be lol. So basically, if you have to ask, you can't afford it Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

idealmike
Yes Similar Web! One of the best competition spy tools of today. Almost competing with Ahrefs although they also have a lot of similar ways you can find out most of the biggest, most important and juicy details of your competitors. The free version is okay but for a much more advanced, in depth analysis the paid plan is a lot better. And if you're a serious big business or website and you can afford it, it will go on to more than pay for itself that's one thing they make sure of. So if you're serious about knowing just about everything there is to know about your competition or rival competing website (or at least most of what's worth knowing). It's a valuable investment!

It's so damn expensive though lol Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

I haven't used it in a while because I haven't needed it. I'm sure it's way better now than when I was playing around with it lol Why is it important to analyze your competition, and how do you do it?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

EliteWriter
Despite the fact that it comes at a cost, and it is quite high, I think that it is ideal for someone who can afford it as it offers a lot of valuable insights for competitor analysis. At the end of the day if such analysis is carried out well you can regain that money you pay through sales, as well as improving your position in the market once you start to find ways to 'steal' customers from your competitors'.

that is what im saying elite writer the insight is some thing i do not think is possible to match any where else this is the first i have heard of any of this to be honest but let me tell you from a business aspect i see this as a great invest to help keep up on competition and keep ahead of the game if any one could take advantage of this kind of tool which im sure has happened already i know in the right hands this could be a great advantage to get ahead thats all im saying

Yes these tools can indeed give you a boost - a competitive advantage to do better than your competitors. It is all about analyzing the right info, applying it in your decisions, and get results.

Yes it looks to me like this sort of service will pay its way very very quickly! I had no idea there was a company that offered so much.

Do you know if they offer a free trial to try them out? $199 is quite a hefty price tag to pay without first giving it a go.

from what it sounds like though you are actually basically getting the best for your buck at least that is what i feel i am getting out of it when i read your comment over and if that is the case then depending what stage is your business this could possibly be a really great investment and that is for sure one ninety nine is not that bad considering all these features and great things it can do for you , i dont know though it might be best to contact them and see other plan options they might work with you

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Lynne
Ouch that is quite a price tag but I can see how they can charge so much for the services they offer. Do you know how many of your own websites you can add for the $199 per month or is that just for one website?

Hi EliteWriter thanks for your nice question. Analyze of your competitor is very importance for ranking concern on search engine. For SEO affect on search engine it is very much necessary to analyze competitor. It is necessary for many sense. If you want to exceed from your competitors, you need to know what sort of activity they do? What is their current position? What is weak points or what is strong points? And need to know how much backlink they created and what type of backlink the got for his site. If you at least know about this parts from your competitors. you may take proper plane for your website for SEO result.

When you say competition, what comes to my mind is the website particularly the blog because that is my experience. Related to the topic, there was this tv host named Willie who was watching the rival noontime show during commercial breaks. At night, he would evaluate the rival show to learn what makes it tick with the audience. And it came to pass that Willie’s show became the number 1 noontime show. He said it himself that knowing the style of your competition can help you innovate so you can surpass them.

According to what I've studied in business school, studying your competitor by doing a competitor study which includes, benchmarking and client interviews are standard operating procedures in opening up a business. One should always do some research on his competitor to find out what he's doing right and when you have all his right moves all you have to do is implement it and tweak it up a notch so that yours would have an advantage.
