    Is pinging a website the same as backlinks?

    Is pinging sites the same as backlinks? Or does ping just index sites but will help you rank backlinks?

    No pinging is different. It's used for all sorts of things from telling search engine bots like the Googlebot about new content it can crawl and index. To telling certain sites like newsfeed sites, feed and blog directories like Technorati, Blogcatalog or other WP blogs too and peoples feed readers etc so they could fetch and display your latest posts.

    But pinging is rather useless for SEO and is a complete waste of time spending much time doing. All it does is send a notification (ping) to a search engine spider like Googlebot that there is a new link and source of content that it can crawl and index. But pinging doesn't guarantee that your link/content will be crawled and crawling isn't a guarantee of indexing either. Bulk pinging mass links is considered black hat I can tell you that. Pingserver tools are created only for black hat SEO's in the first place. Plus sending too many pings can get your domain blacklisted by Pingomatic which actually sends the pings in the first place.

    A lot of people think that they need to massping every blog ping server under the sun the moment they publish a new post to their blogs. But most blogs like WordPress automatically ping Pingomatic each time you make a new post anyway. That's why it's there in the Reading Settings. And once that's done there is no need to do it again. Although Pingomatic doesn't auto ping every blogserver and search engine bot and using something a blog ping tool can ping more services but none of them really matter.

    Oh I didn't know that about pinging Mike. I always ping my new content or updated content with pingoat.com but that is not exactly mass pinging. Do you think that this helps my websites or do you think it is a waste of time?
    I have a list of things that I do each time I publish new content or update old content and pinging is on that list.

    Hi Lynne, if you're using WordPress then a ping is sent each time you publish a new post to Pingomatic which pings all the Blogservers actually worth pinging. As this is done for you, there is no need to do it twice or again. It's like opening a support ticket for one thing, then opening another ticket the next day for the same thing. It's not going to get your original issue dealt with any quicker and is just going to slow the system down for everyone. That's sort of how it is when you over ping. One ping only is enough. Also if you're doing other things like you do after you submit a post such as post to all your social media sites, pages and profiles etc and you have do follow links from other blogs where your new post shows up in their blogroll etc then there's no need to do a ping anyway and just let Google discover it in its own time. There's no need to even spend much time at all on pinging and you may as well drop it from one of your activities as that time would be far better invested in doing other things like building better links to your site which will go on to help you much better in the long run. And if you're building high quality links then those wont and shouldn't even need pinging anyway. It's only low quality links that bh's build that need pinging which are on pages that have no content on them, hence the need to ping them. My personal opinion and rule of thumb to go by is if it needs to be pinged to be discovered, it ain't worth having! Is pinging a website the same as backlinks?

    Oh wow Mike, I really thought pinging was essential, otherwise I wouldn't bother with it. Trust me with only 3 hours every morning to work in I only do things that I think are necessary to do!

    I am going to be spending more time with building backlinks so I will do doing that instead like you suggest. Unless maybe it is a newish website I am working on? Then pinging might be a good thing until the website gains authority?

    There are major differences between pinging and backlinking, and they should not be confused with one another. Pinging is merely about notifying about changes in a site. For example, you got a quality backlink or maybe you are trying to rank for a keyword more quickly than other sites. But Pinging does not help your site to get backlinks, and to explain it simply it is sort of like you are giving a nudge to search engines that your site has made some sort of update. It may help to get your site indexed a bit faster, but that is not for sure either.

    As I understand it pinging is not backlinking... Pinging is just notifying other websites that you have new or updated content so your website gets indexed or ranked faster.

    Pinging a website: Pinging can be used to show up as a referral on another websites internal analytics or stats, including Google, Yahoo & Bing analytics. When a webmaster sees the referral stats they may click your link to see what the site is all about and you will get a real visit, and possibly a sale. This can be accomplished via bots. On a massive global scale, where you change i.p. addresses and randomize referral links you can get a bunch of sales. It is the hard way to get sales but it does work. Web-masters will open your site from their referral stats and sales will occur but again only with massive pinging. For this to work you also have to make it look natural and target the correct audience and websites in your niche, [expect a .000002% or less response] It is the hard way to get sales but it is measurable for people on a low or no budget.

    From what I understand in pinging which we normally do when we think there is a problem with a website, is that pinging can check if the site is online. When the ping returns null numbers then that means the site is not online. My question now is this – does the site gets traffic when you ping it? Take note that you can ping a site continuously and it will return diagnostic numbers which means the ping is accessing the site.
