NASA: Juno probe reaches Jupiter after 5 years!

According to NASA, the Juno Probe, which was launched on August 5, 2011 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station has made it's way to the gas giant Jupiter. With the maximum speed of 23,610 mph, it took the Juno Probe about 5 years to reach Jupiter. The cost of the Juno Probe is set at 1.1 billion USD.

I just heard about this today

This is pretty awesome since we've never gotten something to Jupiter successfully. This kind of reminds me of the robots discussion we were talking about last week.

If we could just send some robots to Jupiter and harvest the asteroids out there we'd be trillionaires

Very awesome indeed. Space intrigues me, and I have no idea why. I always follow space related news, and always seem to be up to date with most space related events, actions, plans, etc. I can't wait until they send actual humans to live on a mars colony. This would be very exciting, and hopefully I can create a discussion based upon that topic.

To be frank, I cannot imagine the distance that the unmanned space ship had traveled. My finite mind couldn’t understand why man has to reach that faraway planet just to observe. I’m not being anti-space travel but what did we get from that probe, is there anything substantial that proved a theory or something? I understand that astronomers are very interested in those circular orbs near our own planet. But to spend that much with nothing to show is a waste of money. It is not comparable to the money spent in sending people to the moon because having humans on the moon is a feat that is incomparable.
