I find it hard to come up with good names for my ebooks. How do you do it?

Hello,
As an author, I find it hard to come up with decent names for my ebooks. I've been struggling with that ever since I launched my first ebook four years ago.

I usually try to come up with something unique, fresh, and something people could remember easily, but it's difficult. I find it easier to come up with names for other people products or business, but I'm having a hard time to do this for myself.

Are you facing the same issues? How do you do it? Where do you get your inspiration?

Why do I find it harder to come up with names for my own products rather than for other peoples products?

Best Regards,

I don’t write ebooks, but I know what you’re saying because I feel same thing when I’ve to choose a name for my softwares. The most important thing is to choose something short and easy to remember. I always try to choose a name that fits with my product, and sometimes this part is very difficult because I want to choose something unique and which is not used by others. How to find out if that name is not being used by others? Google is the answer. I always Google my ideas, in this case my ideas are "names" of my softwares.

Hey procoder,
I can clearly see your point regarding google and to see if the name is taken.. But how do you come up with the ideas for the names in the first place?

I always try to name my ebooks after the content so to speak. If I'm writing about SEOClerks, then I would name the ebook to "SEOClerks" something. Perhaps "SEOClerks fanatics" or something similar. But, that's just not good enough. I want good names, names that are easy to remember and I would love them to be a bit "catchy" too. That's how I come up with names for others people products.. But I can't do it as good when it comes to my own..

I know what you mean. When I am brainstorming for other people I get ideas when it is for my things I get like brain freeze. Why not ask someone close to you, that you trust for some ideas and talk it out?

I find chatting to my sister (she is in web development) to be very helpful. It is important to talk to someone trustworthy though. I think a lot of people share their ideas too freely and have people steal them.

Thank you Lynne!
I don't have too many people around me to talk with unfortunately, as most of my friends (who I truly trust) aren't interested in the work I do, and because of that, I usually try to spare them everything I do. Even small details such as names for ebooks etc. I do have one friend I commonly discuss things with, but he's a total stranger to everything that goes on online, so he's inputs aren't that helpful all the times. I've also made some mistakes in the past where I share details or discuss things in detail with "trustworthy" so called friends I've found online.. When they suddenly just disappear with my ideas. However, something like that has never happened regarding ebooks or names for them.

It is very normal to have a block. It also happens to me when I am asked to come up with a title for an article at times. I find it helpful to make a list of keywords used in the content so as to then try to formulate a title from them. Sometimes it is also helpful to make a quick online search and check out some titles of similar ebooks/articles, which might help you get some inspiration. Some days are better than others. So if you just can't come up with anything do not keep thinking. Leave it and try again several hours later or the next day.

Thank you EliteWrite, I appreciate it. A list of keywords to use sounds like a good idea. Perhaps most people are doing this to come up with names for things, but I've never done it. I usually come up with the whole titles in my head and when I have about 3 or 4 different ones, then I'll write them all down and choose one of them. Much like rock-paper-scissors actually. I find it hard to come up with good names for my ebooks. How do you do it?

Book titles should ideally be short and sweet and too the point! I mean, what is it you're writing? So, if you're writing about how to train your dragon, you might call it "How to Train Your Dragon - Tips and Tricks from a Dragon Pro" Or, if you're writing about getting affiliates for SEOClerks you might call it "The SEOClerks Affiliate Training Bible" or something like that. So the title is derived from whatever it is you're writing about. Or whatever it is the eBook is about.

The keywords list is a great idea! You can use a keyword density checker tool to see which keywords are used the most in your content. Remove all stop words like the, and a and to and the etc since those will be prevalent. And then from the list of most used keywords, you'll be able to see which keywords your content or eBook is using the most and use them to help you come up with a title.

But generally speaking, your title should be derived from whatever the eBook is about. But I know that's easier said than done! I find it hard to come up with good names for my ebooks. How do you do it?

Good luck!

With names, I kind of just use what comes up to my head. Maybe it isn’t the best title but I think the contents and reviews becomes more important later on. Yes, a good title can be very eye catching but if you have a good reputation for selling quality ebooks, then the title doesn’t matter as much because the author (your) branding is the key to the sales of the book. I am not someone who is good with coming up with names but I think this hasn’t affected the sales of my ebooks. Having said that, I sometimes ask my friends to come up with names for me.

I start writing with a working title. As I continue writing, I come up with an interesting title. If that does not happen, the working title stays and I continue with the book. A good title could crack up when I am working on the second draft. If this also doe snot happen. I create numerous titles based on the book subject. I google these titles. If there are lot of contents including books for that title, I eliminate the possible title and again do a search on another possible title. I continue to do this until I get a fresh title. I then check the search query on Google Keyword planner tool. You can even try book title generator tool. I have done this couple of times and found good titles.
