Are forums social networks?
Forums have both the social and network aspect; forums allows you to socialise with others and is like a network of people who enjoy the same topics/niche. It can be quite easy to add a chat system and arcade to your forum which makes it even similar to social network sites like Facebook. Some people may however disagree as you don’t normally join forums to network with people you actual know in real life. However, once you start engaging in forums, you realise you actual makes friends with people from all around the world without disclosing too much about yourself; something that I probably wouldn’t do on something like Facebook.

Forums are the best place to learn new things and to meet new friends, but not only. I really like them, they are very similar to social networks, but forums are forums and they are unique in their style. I’ve learn many things from forums, but nothing from facebook. So I’m fan of forums :)

I actually had a profile that had a pen name and it was banned after about 3 months because it was found out to be false. I named it after a comic book character so I guess that could be the main reason it was banned lol
I actually had an argument with someone about how I think facebook is just a custom coded forum. The main thing is that your posts go on your profile and not a forum thread. Your profiles do look a little prettier, but that's about it.
Forums are the first types of communities that you could join online where you could get to know people. I understand that social platforms today are very popular and you don't have to meet new people because you can friend all the people you already know. But back in the day, and still today of course, forums were where you could go to brainstorm or meet like minded people who only wanted to talk about a certain topic.
Forums are still pretty awesome in my opinion, but not all of them can be treated equal since they are all ran by different people or companies.
One of the few differences with forums and social platforms is that on a forum you can use a pen name if you'd like. I'm sure you can use a pen name on social platforms, but people today are using them like it's their own journal or diary and want everyone to know who they are :D I actually had a profile that had a pen name and it was banned after about 3 months because it was found out to be false. In the end, I do think that social platforms of today have sprouted from forums and evolved a bit. They're still fancy forums though :D

Yes forums are social networking sites because they are a place that people can socialize on. They were the first platform to let people to have their own profile which you could use to network and socialize with other profiles (people) and openly discuss the things they all share like the same interests, passions or hobbies they have in common with each other. But people do socialising on a forum just like they do in any modern social networking site today. In that they are used to share content like pictures or videos or start discussions or ask questions and to interact with that content by commenting on it, liking it and sharing it etc. So they are very similar in that respect.
Forums often lack all the same features that most modern social networking sites have like infinite scroll timeline but some modern forums can have most of these same features these days such as Xenforo which helps you make a full blown social networking forum. That has things like powerful profiles. Groups and Blogs not to mention show the latest posts anyway which is like infinite scroll for busy forums!
But having these features makes some forums look a lot less like just simple basic forums and much more like a social networking site that just happens to have a forum community too. I mean they both let you do basically the same things only in their own way.
So since forums are social places where people interact with each other in some way, and any site that people can connect and interact with each other in is a social site. And since they both provide people with the tools to curate and share and interact with each other the same even if in their own unique way. Forums are very much like social networking sites.
But usually forums are used for advertising and marketing or for personal reasons of some gain. They usually have very long posts and threads with many comments and links in them. Where as social media sites have these too but traditionally updates are much shorter in nature and things are shared onto social networking sites much quicker than they are on forums which are usually the second platform news ends up on before it finally ends up on people's blogs. :)
