Do Youtube ads work well to produce new subscriptions for a Youtube channel?

Although I haven't tried Youtube videos, they could be very useful as they appear in the top right hand column of a user's video page/feed and are likely to be seen as helpful suggestions as they are similar to what the user is already viewing. There is a good chance, these ads will be very targeted to the viewer's needs in much the way Facebook targets ads.

These ads are highly targeted to be similar to the videos being watched, so you'll likely get some click throughs from those watching as they match the viewer's current interests.

I don't like paying money for advertising but since Youtube is a reputable source, it might be a good investment. These ads are sure to bring lots of resposnes, just depending on how targeted your advertisements are or how professional the ad looks.

If I had an affiliate product that I wanted to promote, I would use a Youtube video ad, but I'm not sure how much that costs versus internet advertising on other sites.
