Why does Facebook keep suggesting friends to me?

I don't know any of these people in the 'people you may know' column on my Facebook feed. They are just friends of my own friends. I'm not going to randomly add these strangers. Why do they keep suggesting them?

And, it can be awkward when Facebook suggests a friend of a friend who you are not really close to anymore, but have not unfriended.

They find friends of your friends because it helps people find friends who they have not yet found that live in the same area or could know in real life. If you have 400 friends you don't even know then this could get annoying, but the site wasn't built for that.

Sometimes I do not understand why they do this. Because when you have a person ask to be your friend, they ask if you know them or not and if you do not, they block them from sending you stuff. But then they go and recommend friends to you?

Facebook is just trying to connect people and give users a new reason to keep coming back to the site.

Facebook always try to connect people and also want to expand their website, they suggest friends because it can be possible that you many know them and you can easily find your relatives and friends

they do this all the time to me. I do not let it bother me. If I want to friend I do, if not I just ignore.

And, who knows, maybe there is a chance you will discover a long lost relative through Facebook's suggestions.

Maybe it's possible. But, I don't list all of my relatives on my Facebook page, (for family privacy), so I'm not sure how Facebook would know.

And, this happened to me too, it was sad and awkward to be reminded of someone who had already moved on. And, no way I would add their new partner anyway. I wish there were a way to block such suggestions as they are only hurtful.

Is there any way to turn off these friend suggestions made by Facebook?

Also, is this feature on Google+ too? I want to get more active with that site. Anyway, this is about Facebook, so I guess I would take Facebook's suggestions on friends. They might know best.

If this friend of a friend really wanted to be friends with me, they would have requested friendship contact by now. If not, then I don't think they would want to be asked.

Sometimes a person on your friends list will share a common acquaintance, but that person won't really know you well enough to feel comfortable asking for friendship.

Facebook is a social media network and network means a connection of people. The reason for suggesting friends to you is to broaden your network with more connections. The idea for a user is to connect and connect. However, there is a limit to the number of friends that you can have in Facebook, it is just 5,000 and you cannot add anymore. Maybe that number is already too big to manage.
