    From my point of view both are very very important for your online business or any site.

    SMM does not involve search engines, but does play a key role in a website's exposure and online marketing efforts. But while social marketing doesn't hold the same monetary costs as dedicated SEM campaigns, they do require large amounts of time and coordination

    SEM is usually closely associated with SEO. SEM is loosely defined as using paid search engine traffic to gain visibility. Paid results usually appear on the top and right side of the “organic” search results. There are many systems for SEM, but the largest platforms are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter.

    Social Media Marketing is about promoting a business via social media channels and includes conversing with clients on their chosen social networks. It can also include “Paid Social Search” or social paid advertising. Paid social search is much like SEM but adds behavioral targeting to the equation. A majority of this advertising is based on a PPC model, meaning advertisers only pay when a user clicks on the advertisement. The two largest platforms for advertising currently are Facebook and LinkedIn. Both allow demographic and geographic targeting, but each caters to a different community profile. LinkedIn is more business (B2B) oriented, where Facebook is typically more social and targeted to the B2C audience.

    The closest these two are coming to mee are the huge benefits you get from posting through google plus in particular.

    In my experience he posts here seem to be slightly favoured by google when it comes to organic searches, and it’s amazing how you can score higher ranked pages with people that have connected with you through g+.

    What is SMM?
    Similar to SEM, SMM stands for Social Media Marketing. And as you can guess it involves paid advertising through social media networks. If you are familiar with Facebook ads, then you are seeing SMM in action. It is the process of using paid advertising to broaden your customer reach and increase your brand exposure.

    Let me first clarify if my understanding is correct. SEM is search engine marketing where you pay so that your business interest will be advertised by the search engine. The spiel for your site will be included in the search list. SMM is social media marketing which you do by yourself. Promoting your site by posting on your timeline and other places in social media will give your site traffic. SMM is free so it’s more likely the best bet.
