Keywords are an important part of SEO considering how they let Google know what your page is really about. Google will assume your page is about 'blue widgets' if you have targeted that keyword phrase in the title of your page and in other sections of the page such as meta description and tags.

It is used to place important keywords at the start of a web page, sentence, TITLE or META tag.
It is used to contain the keywords that can increase the results according to the user’s point of view.

My understanding of keywords based on the learning I got from this site is that it works like the backlink. When you upload content on your website, you can tag it with a keyword or keywords. Those keywords are recognized by search engines and they can use your link if the keyword is relevant to the search. For a website to get traffic, the keyword is one important element in your website.
